tax returns

Sorry if this has already been posted about!

Just wondering if you all are doing anything fun with your tax returns.  We are still waiting on Hubby's w-2, but I already started our taxes on Turbo tax since I have all my stuff, and just did a rough guess on Hubby's to get an idea about how much we might get back.

We both decided that we should put the money towards paying off some bills.  Therefore the money is already spent and we don't even have it yet!  UGH!!!

Some day I hope to have enough money to be able to not be in debt and use tax returns on something fun!

Anyone else already know what they are using it on?

Re: tax returns

  • If it makes you feel better, my DH and I are also using our for bills, nothing fun. What's even more sad is that I'm actually really excited to be getting the $ to pay some bills with! LOL

  • You and I must be on the same brain wave this morning - I was just coming over here to post the same question! :-)

I'm in the middle of figuring ours right now, but we can't file until mid-Feb since we itemize deductions for mortgage interest, etc.

We decided if we get a big enough return to put half towards bills and half towards our (hopeful) safari in the fall.

  • We're putting whatever we get towards a kitchen remodel. I CANNOT wait to have a nice kitchen.

Our current kitchen is functional, but annoying. The counter tops are white tile, which I can't stand. The appliances are all "bisque". The refrigerator whines, LOUDLY. And the hood on the stove extends like 3" past the edge of the stove (there was originally a bigger stove at some point) and I hit my head on it all the time. Not to mention, I have NO room for my blender, kitchenaid mixer and food processor. There isn't even enough space under the cabinets for the mixer to fit!

We already have a bunch saved for it and I'm not putting anything fancy in, as we hope to be moving in 5-10 years and don't want to over improve.

  • We are still waiting on three W-2's and one 1099. Our refund doesn't look like it is going to be too sizable (but the W-2's I don't have are the "big" ones). We are splitting it between our e-fund, student loans and our car fund.
  • Getting our cars fixes! So no nothing fun at all.

  • Jeremy got his W-2 but I haven't gotten mine back yet. When I do get mine, I'm giving them to my parents to let a family friend file them like they've always done for me/them. I wouldn't know what to do with them anyway and the dude knows what he's doing.

Whatever we do get back, I want to split between paying off bills and savings. Depending on what we do get back, we MIGHT get a new tv but that's a big maybe. We'll probably save most of it since I'm not sure if I'll be working this summer or not and will need to use that to live.

  • well, in a perfect world, ger and i miiiiiiight get back a few thou this year, like maybe 4G (which is a HUGE deal, bc in the last few years, the most we each got back was like $200).  so if we get back what i think we should, then most will pay off CC debt and wedding debt, and then we will play with the rest--aka go on vacation :)
  • we're still waiting on 1 of don's w2's, but we have everything else...hopefully we can file at the end of next week.
a small part of the money will go towards are week at the beach over our 1yr anniversary w/ his family and the rest is going towards help paying for his truck loan that he owes on that ive talked about previously.

  • ugh - sounds like most of us are old married couples.

DH and I have yet to even guess what we'll get back.  We also itemize - and this year I think we'll be able to deduct the mortgage interest, etc from BOTH of our homes.  DH thinks we're using it towards finishing the basement and the updates we want to do in the kitchen.  I'd like to use it to pay the hospital bills for this LO and to save the rest for when I'm on maternity leave.  We'll fight that battle when we get the money.

  • DH and I are expecting to get alot back this year since we bought our house during the tax credit incentive window, plus we'll itemize deductions for mortgage interest, etc.  If we get back what we're expecting, we're going to go on a really nice vacation to Europe which has been our dream for a long time, spend some on bills and just save the rest for a rainy day.

  • Our appointment to have our taxes done is tomorrow afternoon (snow pending.) I checked it on H&R block and it looks like we're going to get something significant back so we decided its going towards bills. If either of us get anything back from the state, its going to be fun money. I'm not expecting more than $100 so it would probably go towards clothes or something.
  • We're finishing our basement within the next few months, which is NOT cheap.
So, any money we get back will go towards that.

  • Im waiting on a w-2. H made 15grand less this year and we get to claim a marriage, daycare and another kid (his son). We should turn out alright.
  • gerren has not gotten back a single w2 yet!  this is so annoying, i have all of mine but one!
  • I was thinking about this too last night.  Wow, everyone is expecting a tax refund?  I just hope that I don't have to pay.  It's not like I make that much money since my crappy job doesn't pay much.  But I almost owed around $1,000 last year.  What saved me was that I was a part-time student.

I need money to get my car fixed, for our trip to Hawaii, and to start saving for a house...but I doubt I'll get that much back.

  • MFD always owes as he is an independent contractor, but we will be able to file as marrieds and combine our incomes, so hopefully that helps us out. He also made less last year than the year before. Fingers crossed.

  • I don't have my W-2 yet (gov't worker - always get them at the last minute!), but no idea if we'll have a refund this year.  Neither of us adjusted our tax filing status at work, so we'll see.  If we do, I really want to get a new couch.  The one we have was H's, and it smells like hockey (his hobby).  Ick.  And then the rest to e-fund.

Same with us, so I don't know what it's going to be. Whatever we get back we have to put new tires on my Tahoe, which will most likely cost around 900 dollars from the prices we have been pulling so far. We normally get like 1500-2000 each so maybe it will be the same.

Crap, that's expensive.  That's the one thing I miss about my first real boyfriend - he managed a tire shop and got me awesome tires at cost.  I like to drive fast, and I need good tires for that!

I would recommend Costco, if you have a membership.  I've bought from a few different ones, and their employees seem really honest.  I went in a few weeks ago and asked to have mine checked, and the guy was like, eh, you don't need them yet.  Give it another 6 mo.

Yea I needed some months ago but have been putting it off, most of my tread is gone. And before we get bad weather here (usually Febuary) I need to get new ones. Someone else told me about Costco, I might check that out. I don't have a membership but it might be worth getting one if the tires are cheaper.

I'd check it out!  Their prices are online, so you can easily see if it'd be cheaper.

  • I'm not sure where we stand on anything tax-wise this year. We're stil waiting on H's W2. I don't make enough ro get much back in the first place, but I'm not sure how filing' married' will affect the amount of H's generally decent refund. Hmmmm. I'm hoping that we'll get something decent back anyway since H wants to pay down his/our CC. Maybe we'll be able to put some away in my savings too since it's down to almost nothing with my lack of paychecks over the holidays and such.

Shocker, twinsies.  DH always owes and my uncle accountant suggested we file separately, since I hardly get a big return.  I'm using my measly $200-ish for our annual girls trip to Vegas.  Hopefully next year, DH will have a regular job, not 1099 himself and we will file jointly and get a big return.

  • Waiting on one of James' W-2's and then we can file. We are going to file jointly and hoping for some $$ back so we can replenish our savings account. Currently, we are in the process of buying a house so all of our money saved now is going towards a down payment and closing costs.
