I know you're in a book club too, so I'd love to get your opinion: I'm in charge of picking our next book, and I've been doing a lot of research on NYT and Goodreads, but has your club had any books that have been really big hits? I'm thinking our groups probably have similar demographics - youngish highly-educated urban professionals - so obviously anything too fluffy isn't going to fly. Anyway, I have a few ideas already, but I'd love your input! Thanks!

A recent read that we've all really enjoyed was Lauren Groff's collection of short stories, Delicate Edible Birds. I'm not sure if you do short story collections, but there's a lot of fodder for discussion in these stories. One story, "L. Debard and Aliette," was selected for the 2007 Best American Short Stories collection.
Brady Udall's The Lonely Polygamist was a big hit with most everyone, though it wasn't my favorite. It's an interesting look at polygamy with glimpses of U.S. post-WWII/southwest history. I found that the characters didn't evolve or grow much, but my club found the story striking.
And here's a rec I wish I'd introduced to the club but read on my own: Maaza Mengiste's Beneath the Lion's Gaze. Story of two brothers and their father as Ethiopia comes under the rule of the Derg in the 1970s. It's a bit slow at first, but it picks up and it is heartbreaking and beautiful.
Hope that helps.
