Naming kids

DH and I got in a huge fight last night trying to come up with a name for this kid. I find boy names incredibly hard to like and now the pressure is on to find another name we like as much as the first. Uh.

It started out friendly, then got heated and we started completely veto-ing each other.

Anyone else struggling to name their kid?

Re: Naming kids

  • Sadly, thi sis one thing that keeps me from thinking about a second child! LOL Caroline was the only girl name we both liked and well, ,we all know that DH and I fought about boys name . Ugh, so much fun trying to name kids :( Goodluck!
  • Would it make you feel better to know that DH is at least taking it seriously? MH and I talk about names and he just makes up crazy combinations-- if we're driving on the highway, for example, he'll take an exit sign and suggest "Pineapple Rand Road Cote" or "Humphrey Maine Mall Road Cote"... Seriously, I may have to ban him from the hospital when it's time to make the birth certificate.

I think, though, someone had mentioned using a system at one point where she and her DH made a list of so many names each-- and then they got to veto a certain number of them as "absolutely not." And somewhere in there, they also had a way of saying "I really really really like this name." And then they left it alone for a bit and then came back to the pared-down lists and started considering what was left... Maybe something similar would work for you two?

    Good luck!

  • I dread having to decide on a name for our future child. Dh and I have been arguing about kids names for the past several years. LOL We'll never agree on anything.

  • Um, yes! Coming up with three girls names that we really liked was tough.

We still get into heated discussions when remembering how hard it was to settle on Brooke. I wanted Brooklynn, he wanted plain Brooke....with an "e" specifically. I wasn't happy about it and said fine you want an "e" I'm going to pronounce it. Now, 5 years later, Brooke tells people her name is Brookie Noelle Ourlastname Stick out tongue On the flip side, however, when she was born I thought she looked like a Hannah....so, yeah.......

Lily was tough too, we'd figured she'd be a boy, and hadn't even thought of girl names. I think it was about a week before she was born when we came up with Lily Carolyn.

So don't worry, you have plenty of time to come up with a name for your new little guy!

  • DH and I will have nameless children... we never agree on those things. The week my best friend's baby was born, I fell in love with the name Eliza which she actually ended up using (completely randomly- we hadn't talked about it) and I told DH and he made the worst face. Ugh.
  • We are ridiculous...we already have a boy and girl name picked out..and DH picked them! I was so impressed when he came up with both of them. Then I proceeded to pick out the middle names. I am so in love with both of ours and am amazed we both agree!

DH had a few beers when he thought of our girl's name...maybe you could try that? Haha

  • We had never really talked all that much about names until the past year or so, and it has been an interesting (somewhat amusing) ride. It's funny how you have names in your own head that you completely adore, and when you tell you DH they make a face or completely dismiss them, and vice versa. We've been looking into a lot of family names and have narrowed it down to a few. I'm really looking forward to DH coming back home again so we can start to think about it a bit more seriously, not that I don't love "Sprinkles" for the time being. Smile

  • We were like that with girl names! With Peter... he is #4 so that wasn't hard to decide on but we couldn't agree on a girl name.  This time around was the same thing, we wanted something somewhat traditonal to go with Peter's name and struggled with a girl name we both liked. Luckily we are having another boy and both liked and decided to go with Jack....  my maiden name will be his middle name.
  • Luckily by some miracle Joe and I agreed pretty easily on Nolan.  We already know what we want for a girl's name if we have one.   I think if it's a boy, there will definitely be some disagreements because we hated each other's other picks for boy names.
  • We had a hard time too. You would think that naming a kid would be so fun, but it's a lot of pressure. DH totally when through a phase of suggesting ridiculous things and it took a preggo psycho breakdown on my part to get him to be more serious. Once we got more into it he had a hard time committing to a name.  Not looking forward to the process the next time around!

  • We really didnt have any trouble agreeing on Hannah.  If we have another girl though, we may be in trouble!

Ok, so Sarah's and my husband already know each other so let's make sure that they don't have naming convos together because mine does the SAME thing.  He always makes crazy sh!t up and it drives me nuts!

  • this was funny to read...my h and i have been together since high school and when i think of names we came up with when we were young and carefree and, like,  20, i am sooo happy we didn't wind up with kids back then...i can't stand most of them anymore...so, whew!

actually, abigail jeanne (with the ne, for my mom) was my favorite, but h's cousin went ahead and named her daughter abigail, so that one's out...beautiful name, though :)

we have a couple of names we like now...our girl's name is kind of unusual, so i can't see it being "stolen," but i actually worry that if we don't have a boy first, someone close to us will use our name first!  i realize this is crazy...we haven't even decided when to start the baby process...soonish rather than later, but we are still trying to get settled in here and h is still looking for a job...plus my job doesn't offer health benefits, so we're flying by the seat of our pants on that front

    wow, maybe tmi

Haha though we are slightly different because we have started the process, I feel the same way about our names we've picked out! Ours are not really unusual, but are older names so probably no one will have the same-but I already know that if someone does I am immediately letting them know that we'll be naming our the same haha but I am really hoping no one will!

  • We thought we were having a boy and my husband really wanted the name John Vincent (Husband's name and his dad's name). My husband doesn't have a middle name and was was even going to change his name so we'd have a real John Jr. That's a lot of dedication to a name so I didn't challenge it, even though my nephew is Johnathan and it might have been confusing.  We had no names at all for girls, other than I said the middle name had to be Mae after my grandmother.  When we found out we were having a girl he remembered his grandmother's name was Veronica.  Honestly, I wasn't a big fan of Veronica as a name, but I liked that our little one would be named after her great-grandmothers as I was.  That's the main reason I didn't try to come up with something else.

My husband also enjoyed proposing silly names.   The favorite was "Rainbow Flan". We also joked about putting extra apostrophes and syllables in her name which seems to be pretty common these days.

Once you do get a name, be sure to use very clear handwriting on the form for the Social Security card.  Someone I know named her son "Emmet" and the card showed up as "Cmmet".  It'll be hell to get it fixed.

It's a big deal giving another person a name.  Good luck!

  • We have the first middle names picked out for our first.  First daughters in my mom's family (me, my mom, my Grammy) all have my great-grandmother's first name: Anne.  MH and my dad both have the middle name Allen, as it is a family name for both.  So a first son will have Allen for a middle name.

We've never touched the subject of first names.  I imagine we'll deal with it as we always do when we have different preferences. We'll each make a huge list and then veto names on each other's list we absolutely can't stand.  After that, we'll probably ony have a few names left to choose between.

  • It took us a little while--DH likes classic, fairly common names (his picks for a girl were Elizabeth and Nicole) and I like --I don't know how to characterize what I like, but he didn't like them.  We somehow both liked Paige and went with it.

Boy names were sort of impossible--DH worked for several years with at risk youth, mostly boys, so lots of names are a "no" to him because he knew someone with that name that he would not to associate with a son of his own.

Maybe get a name book or search online and print lists, highlight names you like and see if there is any that are the same?

and Rainbow Flan reminded me of my all-time favorite name: Buttercup Khaki...for a girl or a boy, really...it's versatile

Okay. Our husbands can NEVER meet. EVER.

My DH went through the first 20 weeks of pregnancy suggesting first names of race car drivers.  At first he would throw out easy to spot names, like Mario or Dale.  Then he started to get sneaky.  I remember discussing names over dinner at Applebee's one night and DH suggested the name Alan.  I said "really, you like the name Alan?"  Then I paused for a moment and thought about it.  Allan McNish is a Le Mans series driver.  Angry

  • We started discussing kids names with we moved in together....in 2002!  We knew we'd never agree.  Our boy name was determined circa 2004 and then our girl name he came up with.

We have middle of the night conversations all the time.  Somehow we were discussing 80's big hair bands, then he mentioned Taylor Dane (as in the group).  Then after that he came up with Taylor Paige.  I liked it and we couldn't agree on anything else, so thats what she is.

We are already discussing #2's name and that one won't be here til after Taylor turns 3 :)   We know we can't agree so we have to start now. hehehe

I am a high school teacher and I have some really negative opinions about certain names for this reason.

We both come up with silly names. For a while Luke's name was Ray Zorback as in the Arkansas razerbacks :) It actually still comes out every once in a while.

But in all honesty, MH is the one who is ALWAYS trying to come up with a name. I try to push it off and every once in a while think seriously about it.

Awww, we have an Abigail Jean - she's also named after my mom and grandmother.

Naming kiddos are super hard!  We still have a boys name but if #2 is a girl, we're screwed.  Good luck, Erin!  Are you sharing????  hehehe

  • Ben didn't have a name for 3 days because neither of us would give in.  DH was set on Luke (I would have agreed to Lucas but he wouldn't budge and I don't like Luke with our last name) and I liked Isaiah.  Finally at the last minute we compromised and said we both like Benjamin and the rest is history :)

  • We had a hard time, for Keaghan's name we went to a name website and I made a list of the names I liked and then we went name by name and DH got the veto and we picked out Asher first and then DH found Keaghan... I really wanted Asher to be his first name but I picked Jack's name so DH decided he wanted Keaghan to be his first name and I got Asher as his middle name..

but before that fateful day, there were many silly names that we went through!
