I may move?

Recently a new position has opened up at work in our corporate area.  H qualifies and it would be an awesome job for him.  Definately a promotion and a giant career move.  I would be so proud of him if he interviewed and got this job.  BUT.  It's in CA.  That is very far for me, I've never even crossed the Rockies (except for a week honeymoon in Maui).  My family (and his) are all here in FL or in NY.  And we have a house that we will never be able to sell, or at least for a few many years.  Don't really know what the pay rate for the job is is, but it would have to be at least 20k more, minimum.  I'm still in the warming up phase right now.  He hasn't applied yet, much less heard back as to if he would even be a consideration.  But I don't want to tell him to go ahead and apply unless I'm rooting for him 100%.  He's very considerate of my feelings and I'm trying to walk a line between being the loving supportive "go-for-it babe, you can do anything" wife, and the realistic "we have a mortgage payment here, what about all your tools and stuff here" naggy wife.  There really isn't an answer, but I just wanted to vent.  Thanks for listening :)

  • I say you should encourage him to apply and then face the bridge of whether or not to take it when he gets the offer.  There are just too many unknowns (like the salary!) for you to make a decision at this point.  The worst that can happen if he gets the offer and you decide not to take it is that he gets to opportunity to show his higher-ups that he is very interested in advancing his career but is waiting for the right opportunity.  How exciting for both of you!

Well said.  I say apply for it too.  Then you'll have more time to weigh your feelings while you're waiting.  CA sounds great.  Where abouts is it in CA?

  • Sounds like good advice.  Advancing in a career that he's worked very hard for already can not be a bad thing.  CA can't be so bad, right?  It's in Calabasas, which as he described it is a short drive from LA and a short flight to San Fran.

LOL Aly!!  Crazy right?  Just an early opportunity right now.  But I'm warming up to the idea pretty quickly.

  • Lots of celebs live in Calabasas....can I come visit and hang out in your Target/Whole Foods?

  • ha!  I was just googling and saw Britney Spears lives there.  Maybe a little out of our price range.  Wonder what the slums look like there?    ... ok going to stay positive...  :)

and if we did move, we'd better have SO MANY visitors!!

  • I was just going to add a thought about houses.  From what I understand (I could be ill informed), house prices are extremely expensive in that area.  My cousin lives in Culver City (which is right outside of LA), she said her house is nothing special yet it's value is VERY high.  Just something else to think about...

  • I used to live in San Diego county. CA is nice (you can't beat the weather in southern CA) but I never felt like I fit in there. My parents lived out there for 13 years and are happy to be back on the east coast, although they do miss the weather. They could never afford to buy a house out there (and they make over 6 figures, but have had kids in college forever, houses are ridiculously expensive, etc). They could've moved out to the desert but they didn't want to live that far from my dad's job. The price of gas is ridiculous, and the state is currently broke. These are all complaints I heard from my family and saw for myself. Then there are the earthquakes. Give me a hurricane any day! At least you know it's coming. I love, love, love to visit CA, but could never live there for many reasons. Just something to consider - it's a huge move! Everyone is different. I'd definitely fly out there and spend some time checking things out, asking people you know who live there how they like it, etc.

This was on my list of qualms.  Did I hear that last year they didn't even issue state tax refund checks?  I don't assume to buy a house at first, I'm good with renting.  I'm more concerned with the one we have here and being stuck with the mortgage.  We still owe over 150k and we need a roof.  If I were very wealthy and/or renting my house now I would have no reservations.  Basically it all comes down to the benjamins.  But, he's applying and I'm being supportive.

I didn't hear that, but my family lived in NC for 6 months last year and I'm not sure if that's why my brother didn't get a refund. My parents always have to pay. My sister owes money so she won't be getting any refunds for a while!

Rent is astronomical out there, too, but definitely cheaper than buying. My family had to move 6 times in their 13 years out there because the landlords kept selling the houses they were renting. They got really good at packing, lol! My sister is currently looking for her own apt in NC and she is shocked by how much cheaper they are. She makes about the same as she did in CA and she said she could never live on her own out there, but since it's cheaper in NC moving out may be a possiblity for her.

This and what Aly said at the same time.  There are too many unknowns for you to make a decision before he has a chance to explore the option.  He won't know the possibility if he doesn't try.
