easier way to clean hardwood floors?

Between the dogs' footprints and our son's drool spots, I have to scrub our floors really hard (to the point of exhaustion) to get them clean.  The floors are stranded bamboo with a matte finish.  I currently use the Bona floor spray (per the flooring manufacturer rec.) and their microfiber mop thing.  Is there a better mop/mop head that would do more of the work for me?  I really like the spray as it leaves no streaks or residue, but maybe we need something stronger.  We typically clean it once a week, maybe we just need to clean it more often?

Thanks.

Re: easier way to clean hardwood floors?

  • We only have hardwood in our dining room and master bedroom, so they don't get too dirty. I use method wood floor cleaner and a microfiber mop. I occasionally use my steam mop on my hardwood floors. If it's safe to use a steam mop on your type of wood, I'd try that. I have the Eureka Enviro steam mop, and I love it. Much better than the Shark.

  • We have bamboo floors in our bedrooms and darker hardwood in the living area. Both have a matte finish. We have ceramic tile as well, in the kitchen and bathrooms.

I use a hot water/vinegar mix to mop all of the floors... 1 part vinegar, 5 parts water.

I just put the mix in a spray bottle, spray a part of the floor, then go over it with a microfiber mop. The mop head cleans and then dries the floors.

We have a cat so he can get the floors pretty dirty between playing with his water fountain, batting his food around, tracking litter dust and drooling when he sees a bird. We also have a little boy on the way... so I imagine he's going to make a mess out of my floors. Also, right now we have a lot of salt and snow being tracked around. The hot water/vinegar mix cleans everything... streak free.

I used to have a steam mop, but it left streaks everywhere and they're not really good for wood floors anyway (some manufacturers will void the warranty if you use them).

  • I steam mop to get all the goobers up once a week. I use a cloth diaper that's barely damp after sweeping on the other days. The steam mop makes the floors look awesome!! As long as you're not using it every day it should be fine.
