PW: If you were me...

So, Long story short: I'm unemployed, no prospects. I registered for medical/billing coding classes that started next Tuesday, bought the texts, etc. I started thinking about going to cosmetology school, which I wanted in HS, but still iffy.

Well, today, my mom calls and says that the school called and the billing coding classes are canceled due to low enrollment. And I get a call from the LI beauty school to go visit and see if I can get financial aid...

What do I do?? (sorry for those who saw this on my FB, I'm just still torn.)

Re: PW: If you were me...

  • Sounds like you're meant to go to beauty school.

  • Unless going to talk to the LI beauty school automatically means you owe them a check and your firstborn, why not go talk with them? If it's something you've been thinking of since high school, it certainly couldn't hurt to go, take a tour, and find out what your options are.  You don't need to make a decision that very second, right?

  • Do you know anyone currently working as a cosmetologist? If not find someone you can talk to that is in the industry. Ask questions, maybe you will find that it's not the right job for you. It's a lot of money to invest when there is uncertainty!

I took cosmetology in high school which gave me a clear understanding that it was not a career for me!

  • I say its worth going to the meeting at the other school and go from there. I am a firm believer in doing what is going to work in the long run not just short term.

Can I ask what changed your mind?? I just curious, and I don't know anyone in the industry to talk to.

  • As PPs said I would go and check it out. Plus I think if you go you will know for sure rather than it being one of those things that you look back and regret at least not looking into it.

Honestly I just realized I didn't have the patience for it, I got really frustrated when things didn't work like I wanted.... plus I don't think I would have lasted long I have a bad back and I can't spend long hours on my feet.

  • I agree with what most of the PP's said. Go visit the school, it honestly can't hurt to go get information and check it out. And who knows maybe it was meant to be.

  • Do it! It's a good skill to have under your belt. Even if you eventually go into a diferent field, you can always cut hair on the side for extra $$. My friend Amanda works at a Great Clips where it's $14.99 for a cut and doesn't make much money, but she comes to our houses and cuts and dyes for us on the side.

  • I agree with the other girls...
I would check it out first, talk to the teachers, find out more about it from the people who do it every single day, and go from there. If you love it, go for it. If you're iffy, maybe hold off to find out more information!

  • I agree with PP that mentioned talking to people in the field. If you're looking for a job with money, this career isn't the one to make lots of money. But it can be rewarding that you can make people feel beautiful. :)

Just like any job, it has it's pros and cons. And with this you can work as a hairstylist/make-up artist while going to school for something else too. It can always be a back-up plan.
