Goat Yogurt

Has anyone ever tried goat yogurt, and, if so, are you a fan? I have been lactose intolerant for a few years and was having soy-everything, but for the last year I have been trying to cut back. So I drink almond milk and have coconut milk ice cream (but somehow am not a fan of coconut milk yogurt) but I wanted an alternative to soy yogurt. I actually have had goat cheese (in small doses) and have been fine, so I'm wondering whether goat yogurt will work. I also wonder what it will tatse like...?

Re: Goat Yogurt

  • Me me me!  Smile.  I like it, but some brands do have a strong smell.  I buy the plain kind (maybe the smell is not as noticeable for the flavoured ones?) and put lemon and honey in it.  It's pretty expensive so I can't have it very often but I splurge if I want to make tzatziki or something.

Taste-wise, it's not so different from cow's yogurt.  If you like yogurt in general, you should be fine with goat.  Same texture, same sourness, etc.

  • You know what's WAY better than goat chese & goat yogurt? Sheep's cheese and yogurt! It doesn't have that grassy, earthy taste like goat does... it's a bit sharper and tangier, but creamy and not at all like licking a goat. I swear by the stuff!

  • Huh, I didn't even THINK about going for sheep yogurt. I have to look for it next time I'm at the grocery store. I assume I'm gonna have to go to Whole Foods or a health food store to find these alternatives...thanks!!

  • You may have to - if there's a cheese shop around you, they'll probably carry some sheep's milk cheese. Libert? is carried in most Whole Foods, and they do a sheep's milk yogurt... I actually haven't tried it yet, but do have some in my fridge!
  • me!  at first w/out evening knowing it.  I lived off of a heap of yogurt and honey for breakfast when I was in Greece for a month.  I couldn't get enough of the stuff and then asked why it tasted so good (great honey aside) and was informed that it is from sheep milk, or occasionally sheep and goat blend.

Every since I have bought sheep or goat milk yogurt regularly.
