POLL - Riddle me this...

I work for a 110 employee company.  I am the marketing department of 1.  I've been with the company for six years with increased responsibility over time.

Today, I was told that they have created a Director of Marketing position, and that basically I would not have a chance at it.

My question to you is -

[Poll]

Re: POLL - Riddle me this...

  • Although I voted "wanting to know from the start", I wonder if you had a position description for you to read so you could see if you could even qualify.  Sometimes there's a "well, maybe, if I word my resume just so" excuse to try to apply for it, but generally, I know whether or not I'm qualified for a position by reading the PD.  I would qualify reading the PD as "from the start" as opposed to just being told I'm not qualified without any quantitative evidence to support that.
  • I was given the job description but feel like it's so condecending at this point - like, oh, wouldn't it be cute if she applied for the job.  There's nothing preventing me from qualifying for the job except that my boss thinks our president
"will listen to someone from the outside" more than if someone from within is  promoted (which really means ME, since I'd be the only internal candidate).

Sounds like they want some fresh ideas and new point of views.  To them, they may not see anyone with that criteria in the company and want to do an outside hire.  Also, do you have any degrees in marketing?  Maybe they want someone with a degree to be the Marketing Director?

  • I do have a Bachelors in marketing & management.

I suppose we'll see... the flip side is that I had a second interview with a new company last week, and have an offer pending from them (they did background, credit, and reference checks).  I hope I hear from them tomorrow - maybe *I* need a fresh start too.

    Good luck with the interview!

  • Thanks!  I did hear from them today with a great offer that I've accepted, and I'm putting in my notice tomorrow!  :)  Interesting to see the pool results, almost 50/50!
  • Congratulations on the new job!  I think the bad happens to put you where you need to be to get to the good.
