Please share your skin remedies :)

I have literally tried everything... just canceled proactiv, been on it for over 2 years, and it is doing nothing. I never had acne until I hit my late teens-early twenties and now it is just crazy. I feel like no one takes me seriously as a teacher, because I look like I am in high school.

Anyone have any good tips, even dermatologist recommended stuff. I am going to see the derm. next month, just curious if anyone has a good product that they using so I can ask about it. :) thanks ladies... hope I'm not alone out there, its very embarrassing and annoying to be heading into your mid-twenties with acne. Confused

Re: Please share your skin remedies :)

  • When I came off the pill my skin became AWFUL.  I get regular facials and my esthetician said "Are you sure about wanting a baby?  Your skin looks awful!"  She was joking of course, but I was a mess.  I just continued to get a facial every month, and use a sacylic acid toner after I washed my face morning and night.  It took a bit, but it worked.
  • ProActiv sucks, IMO.

I did not have good skin until I was about 29-30ish. Then it just cleared up!

But I will tell you the regimen I adopted that did help immensely.

Morning- wash with Clean and Clear continuous acne control cleanser (it comes in a purple tube). Dry. Apply acne med (salicylic acid) on affected area (don't overdo).

Night- use a more gentle cleanser (I like Purpose). Let dry thoroughly. I was prescribed Retin A when I was 26 or so for cystic acne and the stains it was leaving. After 6 months, my scarring was gone and the acne improved a lot.

Retin A is harsh- I only use it 2-3 nights a week and I use SPF moisturizer daily, especially with where I live now. You must be careful in the sun.

Camedown- I did not have a single zit the entire time I was pregnant. I did have a few badly clogged pores about 6 weeks postpartum, but those were honestly nothing and cleared up with a topical.

  • Trust me, you have plenty of company in the adult acne department.  The idea that acne only happens to teens is a total myth.

So two things have really worked for me.  #1 simplify my cleansing and treatment routines so I'm not overstripping my skin and #2 Bare Minerals RareMinerals Blemish Therapy.

I've always had bad skin but the last few years it seems to be a lot better.  In the morning I don't use any soap and just splash my face with water, followed by a gentle toner like The Body Shop's Tea Tree Toner or Burt's Bee's toner.  If my skin feels dry, I'll use some of my Olay Regenerist Serum also their eye cream before applying my makeup (Bare Minerals).  Then at night I cleanse with Neutrogena liquid soap, which also takes off my makeup, and I invested in a Clarisonic a few months ago, which I use with the Neutrogena as well.  Finally, I apply the RareMinerals blemish treatment to any existing zits and as a preventative to any problem areas.  I love this product.  So much easier on my skin than the over-the-counter stuff and seems to work pretty well for me.  It also doesn't bleach my towels or bedsheets.

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • ProActive definitely did more harm than good for me.

After it almost destroyed my face, I realized that my skin is SUPER sensitive. Clean & Clear, Neutrogena, St. Ives, they all made my skin even worse.

Now I use the sensitive skin line from the Body Shop. I LOVE it! I use the foam and toner in the morning and evening, moisturizer in the morning and an exfoliating cream at night. I haven't had a serious breakout in months. It's the best!

  • I meant to say try a few things- acne and gentle. Purpose and Cetaphil are good gentle cleansers. Some people get more acne with acne treatments because they are harsh.

I also have DDF glycolic acid wash that I adore, but I haven't used it since before I got pregnant. This summer I will use it again. It is expensive, but I really love it.

THIS!! I use it  (clean and clear continuous control face wash) every day and have NO problems- but anytime I don't use it, I break out.  I used to use it 2x a day in FL but the air it too dry up here for me so I switched to just morning.

So far this pregnancy my skin has been okay.  Last time as soon as I stopped using the toner with sacylic in it my skin was a nightmare.

  • To everyone-- you all rock :) haha you made me feel so not alone in this, pain the the ass situation. I will bring up the retin-a to the derm. I also have the cystic acne and alot of marks that it left.

A few brought up bare minerals, which I love, use, and swear by! But I will also look into the clean and clear product mentioned. Thanks again to everyone... hopefully within the next few months I will see some results. :)

  • the only thing that worked for me (besides starting birth control) was antibiotics. tetracycline and later minocycline (easier on the stomach) did a great job clearing up my skin.

And you're definitely not alone, I'm 30 and my skin is only just starting to clear up. I use biore cleanser 1-2 times a day, clean & clear moisterizer in the morning and purpose moisterizer in the evening, which I've been doing for about 5 years now. Sometimes I throw in purpose cleanser in the winter, it's less harsh than biore if my skin's already dry from winter. I used to have problems with my makeup, I'm allergic to a few brands I've tried and I broke out terribly, especially from liquid foundation (which I of course used to cover up my blemishes... what a vicious cycle!). I use bare escentuals now and that seems to work well.

Good luck with the derm! They always have some helpful suggestions.

  • I was the same way! Clear skin until I was about 22! After trying everyting, the combo that works for me is to use a neutrogena scrub (to get the dead stuff off) and i follow up with this product called ClearAc. It is all  natural (i can only find it at whole foods) and has calendula which is a natural skin soother for all types of skin problems. i do this when i wake up and before i go to sleep. my skin is completely clear now.
