Allergic to antibiotics

Bella started antibiotics last week for swollen lymph nodes in her neck. Last night while getting her ready for bed I noticed a few random speckles on her. Today she woke up and is covered head to toe in hives. Her little face looks like she is wearing a mask.

Her pedi took one look at her and said oh yeah thats a classic case of severe allergies to the antibiotic. I feel so bad for her, she is so cranky. The pedi said this reaction can last for up to 2 weeks. If you have t & p's she could sure use them, she has a terrible cold right now and now this reaction to the meds on top of it, ugh my poor baby. I know it just has to run its course but I feel so helpless. I just want to make her feel better.

Re: Allergic to antibiotics

  • Sad poor Bella!!! Hope she feels better!
  • Oh no poor baby, I hope she isn't too itchy.

I just found out two months ago I was allergic to penicillin, I can't believe I never knew that. What type is she allergic to? Apparently there are so many different types of antibiotics it doesn't have to be the issue it use to be.

    Many, many t&ps her way.

  • I hope that she feels better soon and it doesn't take the whole two weeks for it to go away!

  • She was taking amoxicilan (sp?), so they are not sure if it is that specifically or all penicillans.

  • Poor Bella. I hope she starts to feel better. Many t&p's to her for a quick recovery. Question, was she getting close to the end of the amoxacillin (sp?). This same thing happened with my niece when she was on her last two days of taking the medicine. Scared the crap out of all of us. I even asked my pedi if I should be concerned about Xander since my niece had a reaction, and his answer was its a great medicine so we would try it even with a family history of being allergic to penicillin meds.

  • Oh poor girl.  I can relate since I'm allergic to penicillan and sulfa antibiotics.  I got hives all over.

    Hopefully it clears up soon!

yes, she was on day 8 of 10. My mom and grandparents have allergies to penicillan, but her pedi assured us this allergy does not run in the family.

That's just scary. I understand while pedi's would want to give penicillin but it freaked me out and I watched him like a hawk for 3 weeks for any reaction. I hope she's feeling better in a day or two.
