I am trying to plan a surprise golf outing for my husband's birthday, and one of his friends is causing me some problems.
Here is the issue:
My husband enjoys golf, but he doesn't play often, and he is not great. I was figuring 4 hours would be about the amount of time he could stand playing, and after that he would start to lose interest. One of his friends who is a better golfer and plays often, has said that they need at least 6 hours, since the course may be busy on a Saturday morning, and because my husband is a slow golfer. I can't schedule 6 hours for golf without cutting into other plans for that day, and I really don't want to do that.
I personally think that this friend is not considering how my husband will feel about 6 hours of golf. However, I know little about golf, and am only going off of my memory of him usually only sticking around for 4 hours.
My question is, is it bad form to pay for 18 holes but not golf all 18? For example, is there some reason why leaving after getting to like the 14th hole is considered bad? The friend has said we either need to allot 6 hours or ditch the plan completely.
Thanks!
Re: Need advice on golf
The average time to play 18 holes of golf is 4 hours. Play time varies depending on the level of golfer and how crowded the golf course is. Standard play is 15 minutes a hole. Most golf courses won't let you slow down the pace (even if you are a bad golfer) and you must keep the pace going.
6 hours is a little ridiculous, but you probably don't want your husband to be rushed, so I would build in 5 hours (he might want to hit at the range before he T's off anyway.)
To answer this question though: is there some reason why leaving after getting to like the 14th hole is considered bad? It's not bad per se, but if he's paired up with someone else, they'd have to leave with him (it's not like you can just take your bag and walk back - the 14th hole can be quite a bit of distance from the club house.)
I can probably work around five hours, but 6 is really pushing it.
Thanks for the reply!
Maybe just have him play at a 9 hole course?
I like golfing, but am not that good. So when I play 9 I keep interest and do real good, but the second half I am terrible bc I am tired, hot, or hungry...lol

I play golf all the time.....never in my life have I ever made a round of golf in 4 hours.....where did you get that from? I'd say 5 hours is about right....my longest round was 6 hours, but we were behind a couple of Europeans who didn't understand common courtesy. 15 min per hole equates to 4 hours 30 minutes....there's always a bottle neck at par 3's, so 5 hours is more accurate....
