  • What Crash said... Plus get yourself one of these:

We were using the baking soda/vinegar/boiling water trick on the shower drain for awhile. It would work for a week or two and then slow up again. So we added a plunger into the mix. Again, good for about two weeks and then slowed up again. I picked up one of those sticks (I've seen them at Home Depot, Lowes and Target... they're about $2) and H went to work on the drain for a few minutes... amazing and gross all at once. H did that about 2 months ago and the drain still works perfectly.

It's basically just a heavy duty zip tie with barbs on the sides.

  • Ditto pp, get a zip it from the hardware store.

  • I also agree with the zip it.

About once a month I use the zip it to pull any gunk out of the drains and then I use some of this natural drain cleaner:

I also keep these hair stoppers over our shower drains:

  • Yes yes and yes. With my long hair my shower drain gets very slow...I do this about every two months and it works really well!

  • the zip it is SOOO gross but works.  DH won't do it, he says "your hair, your job" haha but I don't blame him... I hate doing it and it is my hair!

  • I have a drain cover that keeps all the hair from going down the drain. I have to clean it out every time I shower, but it's worth it to not have to clean the actual drain.

  • When we bought out house we had such a slow drain... we knew the guy we bought it from was really hairy though.  Which I totally know is disgusting to think about.   After a year and more bottles of Drano than I car to admit to we finally took a plunger to the drain.  We ended up pulling up the biggest hair ball ever... it was disgusting but we havn't had a problem at all since then.
  • Remove the drain cover and get the hair out of the top part first , then boil a pan of water on the stove , once that boils pour it down the drain. It works every time for me.

  • Yep, the only way to get it to run smoothly is by removing the hair and whatever is stuck to the hair (gross) and then running hot water (with baking soda of vinegar for freshness) through the pipes.

If there's hair in there, chemicals won't work either (yes, tried that, was desperate!) so the environmentally friendly ways surely won't do anything.
