What do you call your ILs?

Yes, I snitched this from another board, but I'm curious.

I call my inlaws by their first names.  It's a little weird, but less weird that Mr. and Mrs. J, and I will never call them mom and dad.

DH calls my parents by their first names as well.

What do you do?

Re: What do you call your ILs?

  • By their first names as well.  The whole "mom/dad" weirds me out, I already have a mom and dad.  Mr. & Mrs. XYZ seems too formal too.

  • Eric calls my mom by her first name and my dad by his nickname. My dad's full name is tough for someone who didn't grow up speaking Hebrew or German and the resulting "ch" sound. I don't speak to E's parents, so they're "your mother" and Charlie when we do discuss them.
  • By their first names, but I could see in the future calling them by Mom and Dad...

  • Sort of a mix of first names and Mom & Dad. I call Rodgers' mom Mama Esther when I'm talking about her, but I don't call her anything when I'm talking to her. I call his dad Rodgers' Dad because I never met him. Rodgers calls my mom Mama Terri and dad Rick or just Dad.

  • Lol, it goes back and forth. It's almost an awkward situation like I don't know if his parents want me to call them mom and dad, so usually when talking to them I try to avoid using anything..

I know my mom prefers DH to call her mom, I can see DH's mom wanting me to call her mom but idk about his dad.

I'm sure down the road it'll be more comfortable calling them mom and dad.

  • First names. I think that MIL's name is a little awkward for me to pronounce so I don't really call her anything when we're in person, we just talk. It's a really normal name, I just have a mental block about pronouncing it for some reason.
  • I call MIL either by her first name only or Mama "first name", but I only every call FIL by his first name. I don't think I'll ever be comfortable calling them Mom and Dad.

DH calls my Mom Mama "last name" and he calls my Dad Mr. "first name." These are the names he started out using years ago and they've stuck.

I can understand that. I have a very intelligent and educated friend who has a mental block against pronouncing the word "breakfast." He has no idea why.
  • I go back and forth between their first names and Mama and Pop.

DH calls my parents by their first names, except for my mom. He calls her Mama and it melts my heart a little bit : )

  • We use first names, although sometimes Clint will call my folks Mama Sue and Papa Tim. I call them Grandma and Grandpa if any of the babies are around.

  • I call his dad, "my other dad" and his stepmom by her first name my husband calls her this, as his dad started dating her when my DH was in HS. We don't talk to his mom, so when we discuss her I usually call her by her first name or I say your biological mom.

  • First names

Same with H to my parents.

  • I call my MIL 'MomMom' and StepFIL 'Pop' ... They have grandchildren and that's what the grandkids call her. Now this is just for the last few years. For the first 4 or 5 years I called her Ms. Nancy and him Bill.

DH calls my mom and dad by their nicknames... Mooky and Pooky. Pooky (my dad) has always been Pooky to me so when I told DH this he said "So what do I call your mom, Mooky?" It has stuck ever since!

  • Do you want the REAL answer or the PC answer? :P

When my FIL was alive, I always called him Papa - just something that started when H and I first got together and stuck. I call my MIL "Mom" just because it feels weird to call her by her first name. I rarely call her that though - I try to avoid it since, given our history...yeah.
