Recommend your GPS

So DH's birthday is a week from Sunday and I think I want to get him a GPS for his car.  He has the absolute worst sense of direction.  I haven't done any research yet so I have no idea what is good and what is not.  I was hoping for some input from you ladies!

TIA!

Re: Recommend your GPS

  • Garmin Nuvi.  I don't know which exact model I have, but it has saved my ass a million times over.  LOVE IT!

  • We got my mom a Garmin a few years ago.  It was around $200 i think.  I have it now and love it.  So much better than Mapquest.

  • We have the garmin nuvi 255W...We love it. I got it on sale at Target.
  • We have a Navigon that's about 2 1/2 years old ... can't remember what the model is, but it reads street names and can get you around traffic.

  • I have a TomTom XL something or other - I've had it about two years and I love it, In fact I took it to California last June and three of my family members had Garmin's and my TomTom was the only one that had the address we were going to in it, which was strange because theirs were all new and updated. I don't know if was just a fluke, but it has happened a couple of other times. My parents just bought the upgrade to mine and they use it when they come down from Alaska, it's been a life save since they typically fly into Boston and rent a car to come down.
  • Tom Tom & Garmin are prob. the top names.  I bought an Insignia on ebay. It retailed for $500 & I got it for $75.  The reviews were great. It had bluetooth which my car doesn't have. It connected to google for searching for locations.  It sucks!  Don't buy it. I can't hear on the bluetooth & have to scream so people can hear me.  She has a really odd accent that doesn't properly pronounce roads.  Boddington sounds like Badunk-adunk.  So, I need to look at it to understand what the heck she's saying. It doesn't have an option to change the voice.  The google worked great for the 1st year, then you have to pay a monthly fee to continue using it.  WTF!  So, I was only able to use that feature for a month, then it expired b/c the person that sold it to me must've had it for 11 months. I can't look up ANYTHING now.  It seems like it doesn't have an internal phonebook like most GPSs & doesn't use it's satellite to find it.  So - don't buy Insignia.

Here are CNET reviews.  I always like to check their reviews, watch demos, etc. before buying.
