Re: **Jena My Love**

  • Jena, I'm sorry to hear about Ross also!! But T&P to you both that he'll find something else he loves!
  • Thanks ladies.  We worked in the same restaurant, so I'm taking it worse than he is, because he gets to be done with that hell-hole and I have to deal with all the fall-out and answer all the "OMG WHAT HAPPENED" questions.  Which isn't a bad thing, he was well loved at work, but it's just a constant reminder of all the crappiness.

He missed a shift.  All of our schedules look the same, his schedule has been the same for the last 8 weeks, he looked at the wrong one and didn't realize he was a lunch&dinner and not just a dinner.  So we're walking in for our dinner shifts, and a couple of the lunch girls are leaving and they're telling us it's going around that Ross is going to get fired.  So we go inside, and Ross gets called into the office.  Sure enough, they fired him.  The big boss is all "Oh it just kills me to have to do this."  Obviously not.  I can't tell you how many times I've heard "this is my restaurant" and "it's my name over the door."  Okay, so this is his decision.  Send Ross home for the night.  Hell, suspend him for a week, whatever, he made a mistake.  But to fire him? Seriously?  Good call John, way to let go an otherwise stellar employee of 5 years.  Good job getting rid of the last trainer and closer who gives a damn about doing things the right way.   And good professional jobs, management, that the staff knows you're going to fire a person before the person does.

So I'm waiting in the kitchen while this is happening, and Ross comes out, tells me, I'm actually quite proud of myself for keeping it together as well as I did (I'm a crier, even when it's just frustration/anger).  I asked him if I could quit, and bless his heart he told me I could.  It would just be stupid to quit right now, so I didn't.  But I went into the office after him and said "Well, I'm going to go home too."  I was "excused" for the evening for my "emotional state."   I want to think it was a kindness, but I know it's just bad business to have a distraught server on the floor.

Silver lining #1: We had an AWESOME date night (it was Saturday).  We went to the cheap seat movies, spent our Olive Garden gift card, wandered around Target to spend that gift card, came home to snuggle on the couch and watch another movie.  Then I finally let him teach me Carcassonne (he's been trying to get me to play for oh... about 6 years), which I actually fully enjoy.

Silver lining #2: Ross always closed on Mondays.  Valentine's Day is on a Monday.  Barring another evening job, I just got my husband back on Vday :)

So holy word vomit, with lots of bad grammar.

  • I love that you are able to be so positive in this situation!  I wish you both the best!!!  Enjoy Valentine's Day!!!  :-D

I'm really trying. I tend to be a bit of a doom and gloom, expect the worst, kind of person.  I'm trying NOT to freak out that we're a single income family right now.  I mean, we have a bit of money to sustain us, but it's money that I would much rather put towards something awesome.  Like the mini-vaca I was trying to plan in June, or the (theoretical) house I want to buy.  I'm also trying not to b!tch at him that he's jacked off and played cards all week, rather than start looking for a new job.  He's earned a bit of leisure, and I don't want to rob that from him just because I'm the paranoid freaked out about money one.  But next week... :P

  • Wow, that's just crazy!  Matt is a restaurant GM.  Of course you need to be at the shifts you are scheduled, and own the mistake if you miss a shift, but to be fired over it?  Stupid.  Especially if it's not a regular thing.  Dang!  I'm so sorry, Jena!

Hopefully this just means that he will find a job at a restaurant that treats him better.  And wouldn't it be great if it turns out that he made better tips at the new place too?  Praying that his unemployment is short and that it all works out for the best in the end.

  • Ugh, that is crappy. I hate stuff like that, especially when it is an honest mistake, not like he was out galavanting around town when he was supposed to be at work. You would think that being a 5 year employee, trainer, etc would have some pull but not at places like that, they are all about upselling and turning tables.

Give him a week and then get on his butt!
