Gah

I called the power company again and they won't even give me an estimate for how long our power is going to be out.  Unfortunately, our outage is restricted to just a couple of house on our street so I'm pretty sure we're going to be one of the last outages to get serviced since there are a lot of much bigger outages in the area.  The food in our fridge is already spoiled.

Fortunately, my sister's business partner hosted us last night so we didn't have to sleep in a cold house and we can stay there again tonight.  I'm going to be a baby for a minute though and say that I just want to go home and sleep in my own bed!  I've been sick for three weeks and I really don't need this crap.

Vent over...for now.

Re: Gah

  • That was really nice of your sister's friend.  I hope you get your power back sooner than you think.  I'd want to sleep in my own bed too.  I don't blame you.

  • By the way, when you go overseas, are you bringing any furniture with you?  Will your new home come furnished?  Just curious....

  • I really hope they get it fixed soon.  I know how awful it is not sleeping in your own bed.  You are alowed to be a baby about that!  You need your own house so you can feel better quick.  How is your mom?
  • That stinks! I hope your power comes back on soon!

Its ok to be a baby about things and your sick so that makes it even worse. Hope you feel better soon.

Thank goodness for your sisters friend.

  • Yikes, that sounds horrible!  I am a huge baby when I am cold so I don't blame you for your lack of patience.  Oh and to be sick on top of that......sounds like a nightmare!

Hope you get some power ASAP as well as some much needed rest and a clean bill of health!

As with everything with the State Department so far "it depends".  Some posts are furnished and some are not.  I think out of our current list, only one is unfurnished.  If we get a furnished post (as most of them are) we can bring furniture with us if we would like, but we are limited to a certain number of pounds of stuff that we can ship so there are limits.

As an aside, one of the funniest things about diplo-life is that you see pictures of peope's residences from China to Uganda to Germany and they all have the same style of furniture that State buys in bulk.  There are some rare exceptions though.  For instance, I am dying to go to Bangkok just so I can live here:

  • That Bangkok home is ah-mazing, I would pay you to let me come visit!!

I definitely think we'd be getting a lot of visitors if we ended up somewhere like that.  Alas, Bangkok was not on our bid list.  Sad

  • You have every right to be a baby about it. I'm sorry you are dealing with all this and I really hope you began to feel better soon and get back in your own, warm house and bed ASAP.

Yep, that looks pretty nice.  Can you share pictures of the others you were referring to?  I understand if you can't.  Just being nosy.

The furniture in a lot of posts is this stuff:

Most of the housing is a lot less modern than the place in Bangkok.  I think what you get varies wildly depending on where you are.  In many African posts, you a huge house with a pool but in many European posts you may end up in a tiny apartment.  I'll definitely be taking lots of pictures to put on my blog as soon as we get where ever we're going in May.
