Home Safety Poll

After reading this article from YHL ... it got me thinking.

Have you followed any of their safety tips prior to reading this? (documenting things, taking photos, having floor plans etc?

We have nothing of the sorts. We do have a fireproof safe but I couldn't even tell you what's in it. I have no idea. We are pretty much a big homeowner fail when it comes to fire safety readiness. I should get to work on this. You just never know.

My Mom's home as a child burnt to the ground. Thankfully they were on vacation at the time so everyone was safe and sound. So sad.

Re: Home Safety Poll

  • When we bought our house and got homeowner's insurance our agent suggested that we take pictures of every room and any items worth recording.  I took about 50 pictures and my H put them on a disc that he keeps at work.  We really need to get a fire safe box for our important documents and pictures.

  • I am convinced I'm going to die in a fire so I get really anal about being prepared.

We have a locked fireproof safe with passports, SS cards, checkbooks, birth certificates, marriage certificates, etc.  I have online document storage for my business, personal documents and photos.  We have a fire ladder for our bedroom and a plan for getting out with the dog (I'll climb down first, DH will wrap a sheet around our dog sort of like a sling and lower her down to me and then he'll come out).  When we replaced our windows, we specifically got the full replacements and made sure we got something that opened wide enough for us to get out.

We don't have pictures or drawings of our house, pictures of larger expensive purchases or receipts and warranties in a safe place.  I never thought to do that but will this weekend.

This isn't on her list but we never leave or go to sleep with the washer, dryer, dishwasher or computers running.  I unplug lamps that we don't use very often.  I don't even like to leave our toothbrush chargers plugged in overnight or when we're gone.  I hate having our garage attached because I'm always paranoid that something out there will catch on fire or explode.

I also have a little decal on our front door saying that we have a dog in case of emergency.

Thanks for mentioning this--I've been meaning to do this forever, and I never think of it at the right time.  I just ordered a sticker from the ASPCA after reading your post :)

I do have a note on the door warning people not to let our cats out, but it doesn't say anything about our bunny.  One of my worst fears is something happening to our house while we're away and nobody being around to rescue my pets.  If my neighbors were home, I know they'd let emergency personnel know about our pets (they pet-sit for us), but... what if they weren't around?

Whether emergency personnel actually pay attention to those stickers, I have no idea, but at least it helps me feel like I've done something.

Now... to get a fire-proof safe...

ETA: I mean: the note warns people not to let the cats out in general.  Not in the event of a fire.  Obviously if there were a fire, I would want people to get the cats out.  Just realized the way I said that sounded strange.

  • I am terrified of fires!  My house started on fire when I was in highschool and we got home just in time to stop it before it spread.  This week has been an eye opener about fire safety for me.  My boss' house had a fire and a house across the street from where I work burned down on Monday.

We have a fire/water/extreme heat proof safe that we store all our important documents in.  I also have everything important backed up on thumb drives and stored in the safe.  I do have some photos stored on Photobucket.com, but I was looking into using Dropbox.com for online storage.

We have the sticker that informs emergency services about our animals (I believe Chack and Don's gives them away).  I am terrified of a fire while we are away.  The thought of them being trapped in their kennel during a fire horrifies me.

We have fire and CO2 monitors.  I just read about the voice activated ones this week and was going to get one for Ellie's room in the future.  Right now she would be dependant on us rescuing her.  The article mentioned having battery operated smoke detectors even if you have a wired in system.  I would recommend this.  My boss' microwave started on fire this week and her whole house was filled with smoke and her alarms did not go off.  I am a freak about never running the dishwasher, washer and dryer while we're away.  I've heard soooo many stories about those appliances starting fires.

I guess I need to do a photo walk through of my house and document what we have.  It's funny how we've had 3 different home owner's insuance companies and not one of the agents has ever mentioned doing anything of the sort.  You would think it makes their job easier if a home loss occured.

  • We have a home inventory with pictures and serial numbers of everything (in the event of theft as well).  We have a basic value attached to all of it too for insurance purposes.  We have a fire box that we keep it in as well as a second copy of it offsite at our inlaws.

When I got the fire box though my DH said "you know those don't really work right"...I did some digging and you should always keep the fire box on the lowest level of your home.  If you keep it someplace it can fall in a fire (like from the main floor to the basement) then it will break open and then you're SOL.

  • I love reading through for all the other tips!

Mbgreenwal - I love dropbox.  It is awesome and amazing and so simple to use.  It installs a dropbox folder on your computer so anything you save to that automatically gets updated to their system (obviously you need to be connected to the internet).   And it's awesome being able to access the files from any computer with internet.

I never even thought of that - thanks for mentioning it.  We'll have to move ours.
