Warning to Smart Dispense Dishwasher Owners
Apparently there was some legislation that passed that required dishwasher detergent makers to change their formula. This makes it better for the environment, BUT it can cause problems if you have Smart Dispense. When the old formula mixes with the new formula a chemical action occurs that results in a super firm jello consistency that clogs up all of the pipes and smart dispense container. Here is an article that describes how to prevent this from happening. Unfortunately, we weren't aware of this before mixing the two and have been trying to de-jello our dishwasher now. DH did find that vinegar helps to break apart the jello. GL!

Re: Warning to Smart Dispense Dishwasher Owners
Would we know it if our dishwasher was a smart dispense one? I don't know if ours is, but I figure that I'd know it if it were......
Thanks for the PSA!
Yes, you would. Smart dispense is a feature where you can put an entire bottle of dishwasher detergent in your dishwasher so that it automatically spits out soap when it needs it. So you then refill the container every couple months when that bottle of soap has been used up. The problem is that the two formulas are combining in that container and then in the pipes and becoming hard jello and clogging everything up.
If you put soap in for each cycle, then I *think* you are okay since none of the old formula should be present when you are using the new formula.
