Some days I hate living in a small town.

My doctor gave me a prescription for a breast pump since my insurance will cover it. But I have to get it from a medical supply company that takes my insurance. Since we only have one medical supply company in town, I figured that's where I'd go. So I called to see if they're open on Saturdays since I now work 8-4:30 with a 45 minute commute. The lady says no, and they close at 5.

What!?! It's not like they're a doctors office. They're a freaking retail operation! WTH!?!

So I left work early today so that I could get there before 5. But because of the blizzard we got and the unplowed roads, it took me over an hour to get to my town. I showed up exactly at 5:00 and they were already closed. Angry

I know I have tons of time to do this, but I was worried about my prescription expiring and having to get a new one. Plus, since I technically do have to pay for it (the money goes towards my deductible), DH wants to get it earlier.

So now I have to leave even earlier on Tues when I have to go to the lab to get my blood drawn, so that I can go there too. I'm not a happy camper.

  • You know, I always think of this town as not really small. I mean, I've lived in towns with less than 5,000 people, so 60,000 (plus 20,000 in the town on our border) seems big enough. We have a mall and a major hospital. But still, so many places aren't open in the evenings. Or don't open till 10 am. Or will be closed on random days, like Wednesdays or Thursdays. They should hire some more help so that they can be open longer and do more business. Hey local shops - I need a job!

No, I wonder if they can? Don't I have to give them my prescription?

I'm sure you can fax it over..or have your Dr do so.  Worth a shot to ask.

Give them a sob story (you are so pregnant, not feeling well, etc).  It's worth a try!

Hmm, that is worth a try. Do you think they'll have a selection? I kind of want a Medela after Melissa's post the other day.

  • Does the store have a website so you can view what your options are?

Is it bad that I haven't even gotten my pump yet?? Embarrassed  I'm planning on going to the shop at the hospital (I'm in the same boat as you, has to be from a medical store for my prescription to be covered).

  • Ours did not have a selection, only the Medela. Our store/hospital was also only open 8 - 5 M-F...in a town 35 minutes away. Luckily I have my Fridays off- SO helpful in situations like this!

A website? Lol, that is hilarious! Unfortunately small town also equals stuck in the 1980's. The only companies around here that have websites are the nationwide chains, and this place is affiliated with our local hospital. Actually, they do have a page on the hospital's website but it's a very general overview of products and their phone number.

  • Here most of town shuts down at 3:30 or 4pm on a Saturday.  And on weekdays at 5 or 5:30.  Most stores are also closed on Mondays.  The grocery stores don't keep those hours though.
