Ever colored your hair with box color?
I want to get some highlights and H and I were thinking maybe we could do it with one of those box colors. Between the two of us we might be able to make it look decent, right?
Has anyone used the boxed color for highlights? How did that work out? How many washes does that dye last?

I change my hair color every few months, mostly with a box color - however, I've never been confident enough to do highlights. I'm not particular about my hair at all (I'm one of those, "it's only hair - chop it all off! Let's see what it looks like - it'll grow back!" people), but I've heard many horror stories about highlights out of a box (mostly from my beautician friends).
Do you have a lot of experience with box coloring? If so, I'm sure you'll be ok - but if not, maybe try an all-over color first. From what I know about boxed highlights, they're really easy to screw up - they'll turn out streaky or blotchy easily, because you're only putting color on small parts of your hair and it's hard to keep those parts separate from the rest of your hair. Also, (and I could be wrong on this), I think all highlights are permanent...? If so, they last until they grow out or are dyed back.
GL with whatever you decide - and bring us pictures!

I've done my hair with box highlights before.
well...I had a friend do it for me. it wasnt even, and she didnt comb it through correctly, and I seriously looked like a cheatah it was so splotchy. the color was also a little orangey because my hair usually pulls out warm tones from hair color (what I've learned a few times since then).
I had to have another friend dye my hair, then re-do box highlights, and I still didnt like it compared to a salon. with the money I spend to do it and fix it ($20 for the highlight kits, and $10 for the regular), it was almost worth it to just get it done at a salon.
maybe look up youtube videos, and practice without the dye first?

That is a little far. We were at Moe's (mmm, queso) one day and this guy came up to us randomly and gave us business cards and said he's had his place for 25 years or something and that he's got a great colorist, but it kind of weirded me out, so I don't know if I want to go there.
