Advice would be SO appreciated!

Hello fellow nesties!

My husband (and I) just received orders to move to the OKC area in May. He will be working at OU for 2 years and then will complete his assignment at Tinker AFB. We're both from San Antonio and do not know anyone or anything about the area- so I was hoping someone could help us with where we should relocate. Obviously somewhere close to the school would be ideal, but we're hoping to build our first home and need suggestions (or a realtor!) to begin. Can anyone offer some areas that would be a nice, quiet community near some good schools (I'm a teacher)? We're both in our mid-20's without children so somewhere with the same demographics would be nice, but not necessary. Thanks in advance!

P.S.- Any other information about our new home would be appreciated as well. We literally have no idea what we're walking into :)

Re: Advice would be SO appreciated!

  • If he is going to be working at OU (in Norman) with an eventual move to Tinker (in Midwest City) I would suggest looking for a home in Moore or Mustang.  The nicer school districts (and places to live) are Moore, Mustang, Norman, Yukon, and Edmond... There are several nesties on this board who live in those areas who can give more feedback.  I would search zillow.com for listings- our realtor was Carla Cassarino (sp?) from Coldwell Banker and she was awesome.  If you are looking to build, I would look into ideal-homes.com (they are the best builder in the nation for 2010 and have several neighborhoods in OKC).  If you have any other questions, feel free to PM me.  Welcome to the area!  :)

  • I agree with Moore.
  • Agree--I think Moore is a good option, though Norman wouldn't be a bad choice either, particularly NE Norman (this area has a lot of new development, and it's a pretty straight shot up to Tinker and down to OU).

I live in SW Oklahoma City, just west of Moore and a short distance away from highways. It's not a bad drive to Norman or Tinker AFB. PM me if you want information about my neighborhood and builder--both are fantastic.

As for realtors, I highly recommend Rob Schaerer with Dillard Group in Norman. He knows Norman very well, along with Moore and south Oklahoma City. He also helped us when we looked in Mustang (which might be a bit far, I think).

  • My husband is AD Army and we just built in Moore. Its probably about equal distance to OU and the base from here. We live in a new addition and there are still some open lots here. PM me and I'll give you specifics about the area if you're interested. Without knowing your price range our neighborhood runs somewhere between 180-200+. There is a wide variety in Moore, you can get something very nice for a reasonable price.

  • Moore is perfect for travel to OU and Tinker. We lived there for 3.5 years and really liked it. Without knowing price ranges I don't know where to steer you neighborhood wise. Good luck!

  • I'm partial to Norman over anything else the PP's have mentioned. Since it's a university town, there's plenty of entertainment and activities, but there's also a great community feel to it. Moore and Mustang don't have as much character to me...they're more suburban. I don't have children, and I found Norman to be great for the mid 20's, childless demographic. It's a great school system too.

I've lived in Norman and Moore, and I would pick Norman any day over any other OKC area. But I'm clearly biased. I also agree that living in NE Norman is an easy commute to Tinker area. Are you wanting to buy or rent?

ETA: Just reread your post about building a home. I will say, you can get more house for your money in the Moore area IMO.

  • Thanks ladies! I'll have to PM people this afternoon to get some specifics but this really helps. We're hoping to take a road trip up there in March during Spring Break to find a place so we'll be ready when June rolls around. I can't thank you all enough!
  • Moore is between both MWC and Norman. It is a fast growing city with shopping and an awesome movie theater.

I absolutely love Norman. Norman is a college town so most of the population during the school year is 20 yr olds with, I think, just an awesome atmosphere (no rich stuck up people, eclectic, and easy going). Norman has a lot more things to do then Moore such as music, museums, restaurants, etc. I also suggest the NE part of Norman. Your right next to Sooner Rd. which is a straight shot to Tinker, you are close to campus, but yet not in the "student apartment area".

  • I live on the NE side of Norman. We love it! It has a small town feel but with almost everything a big city has. We used to work by Tinker and it would probably take us 20 minutes to get there. Not a bad drive at all. There are alot of new neighborhood additions happening on this side of town right now so if you are looking to build you are in luck. We used Home Creations (which we probably will use if we build another) but I have heard great things about Ideal Homes. Living in Norman your husband will only have about a 5 minute commute to the university plus there is something always going on during the weekends. Sidenote: I'm also a South Texas girl. Glad you are moving into the area! I'm sure you will enjoy actually having seasons.

  • I loved living in Norman when I went to OU. I live in NW OKC now to be close to my job, but if the commute wasn't so long (going with traffic) I would move back in a  heatbeat.

We're renters, so no advice on realtors or homebuilders here! If you do want to rent while you're building though, real estate prices here are very reasonable.

  • I grew up in Norman, lived in Moore, South OKC, and Edmond/Deer Creek. Since your husband will be working at OU for two years, I would suggest Norman. Shopping, foods, entertainment, schools, etc are much better in Norman than Moore or South OKC.

If you are interested in moving after the OU deal, Edmond/Deer Creek is nice and the commute to Tinker is about 30 minutes. Norman and Edmond are the places I would recommend around OKC.

You asked about good schools - Edmond, Deer Creek, and Norman.

  • I grew up in Norman. I really loved living there and the schools were great too. DH and I just moved to Moore about 2 years ago. We have really enjoyed it. It's a pretty short drive to Norman (I'm an OU student so I commute down there a couple days a week) and it's not too far from Tinker. And Moore schools are pretty good. You can get more house for your money in Moore compared to Norman.

  • I also grew up in Norman - and never left. I live on the NW side of Norman.  OU is pretty far away from the NW side so you don't usually have to "deal" with the college stuff - students, traffic, etc etc unless you go over to the SE side of Norman.

The NE side of Norman is really building up and there are a lot of new neighborhoods.  This would be your easiest route to Tinker and OU.

  • You've been given some good advice on where to live, so I'll just offer you my 2 cents about looking for a teaching job.  Smile
If you haven't already, sign up on teachers-teachers.com.  They list postings that fit your criteria, as well as send you emails about job openings.  Norman and Moore's apps are online, so you can apply that way with those schools.  Good luck!!
  • Oooo thanks so much! How are the teaching prospects up there? Here in Texas we just learned our funds will suffer a huge cut and the district I currently work in is looking into laying off 500 probational teachers....So I would've been without a job regardless whether my husband got orders or not. Scary times. I'm hoping OK will be looking to actually hire people for the next school year!

Teaching jobs are hit and miss--some schools have had major budget cutbacks and layoffs, others haven't experienced such drastic changes. Definitely get your apps/resumes out and start applying now, and you could always get your foot in the door by being willing to sub or by being open to something like a long-term sub position.
