Eating habits of kids

My son has always been such a good eater. I mean, will eat anything and eats 24-7. Lately, its been soooo tough. He doesn't want to eat half the time or he's super picky all of a sudden. One day he'll scarf pickles, the next won't touch them.

Do they go through phases? It's so hard too because he is with so many different people during the week. My mom, my SIL, and daycare. So I know what he gets fed changes often.

  • Josh was/is the same way...He used to eat ANYTHING we put in front of him and now he is Mr. Picky and will either not eat something he doesn't want or will throw it on the floor or at me if I happen to get in the way.  He eats good for MIL when he is there so that is my only saving grace...Tonight for dinner he ate um a popsicle, yogurt, and a kiwi....I tried everything from string cheese to hotdogs and mac and cheeese...

  • Yeah, Marcus goes through phases where he's pickier than others.  Generally if he's got a tooth coming in that's bothering him or he's got a cold, he'll be super picky.  And even when he's feeling fine, one day he might gobble something up and the other day it goes straight on the floor before he even tastes it.

  • Yup, that's normal.  They term it 'food jag'.  But 'normal' doesn't mean it's not annoying.

  • Thanks ladies. It is annoying. My dog is getting fat from eating all the rejects.

  • This is one of the most annoying "normal" traits out there.  Drives me crazy.

  • Same here! Loves something one day, hates it the next. Very frustrating! Gets a little easier as they get more vocal and can ask for certain things, except when they are always the same things or things you don't have.

I was wondering why Manny had gained weight at his last vet appt. Didn't even think of all of the food shrapnel he eats!

  • Jake was never a kid who would eat anything, but he does go through phases where he'll love a food one day and flat out refuse it for a week after.  There aren't many foods that I can guarantee he'll eat any given day.  It's really frustrating.  Not sure how old Luke is or if you even think he needs it, but we give Jake gummi multi vitamins from Trader Joe's to account for the picky days.

  • Luke's 14 months, and he gets a daily vitamin with flouride since we don't have it in our water. That should cover it.

It is definitely becoming one of the more frustrating aspects, but it feels good to know that its not just my kid and that I will just have to use more patience with him :) As I typed that last night, DH was working hard to get him to eat anything. So we gave him minestrone soup and he was refusing. Once he finally got a bean in his mouth he started full on shoveling the rest in. Stubborn kid!

  • I keep on reminding abby there are starving people in ethiopia, etc on a daily basis.  On most days I wish we had a dog or she knew how to use a broom.  She's in a picky phase right now....

  • Welcome to toddlerhood!  Ridley requests Cheerios for every meal.  We have started having to bribe her with Cheerios for dessert if she eats something else for dinner.
