making toilet smell better between cleanings?

is there something safe I can put in the tank that will help make the toilet smell better between cleanings? I don't want anything really strong or fruity etc, just something to either kill smell or just smell "clean".   I just cleaned them last night and last night the toilets still smelled.

Re: making toilet smell better between cleanings?

  • The toilet smells? That means there's a bigger problem that should be addressed instead of just covering it up with some type of deoderizer. I've lived in a lot of different houses in my life and I've never had a toilet smell...other than when it's been used for teh pewps, but that goes away shortly thereafter.

What does it smell like? It could be a water/plumbing issue, a problem with the wax seal, "stuff" built up under the toilet where it meets the floor, etc.

I'd try to find the root of the problem instead of just covering it up... but I'm also a plumber's kid who used to go to work with my dad, so I've seen what happens when people ignore issues in hopes that they'll just go away. $$$$$

  • Make sure to never let the yellow mellow.  Get a bleach tab for each stinky toilet.  I know you said you don't want anything strong and harsh, but there could be bacteria somewhere that you can't reach, 1 bleach tab (which lasts about a month) might do the trick to get rid of the stink, then you just have to maintain.  We have a new house and for a while, no matter how much I cleaned them, it smelled like a men's restroom, we used bleach tabs and never had an issue again.  GL.
  • Are you cleaning up under the rim? If you used bleach and it still smells it may not be the toliet but the floor that your smelling if there is a small leak anywhere. Do you have a carpet in front of the toliet ? If so you need to clean it or in my opinion toss it. Hope you find your stinky problem soon.

  • I scrub our toilet every week, but recently decided to try the clorox tabs in the tank.  I haven't scrubbed in 3 weeks and nothing stinks.  I just wipe the rim and base.  Love it!

This!  I was so frustrated with our toilets-- I don't know if it was the water, the toilet itself, or what, but they only looked/smelled clean for a day, then back to that "restroom-y" smell.  Once we started using Clorox bleach tabs, it's all better!

  • I almost went out and bought these until I remembered that my cats think our toilets are their extra water dishes.
  • Ditto PPs that you should get to the source of the smell, not just cover it up.

Another smell source could be the seat...they can degrade over time and hold the smell.  Our first apartment's bathroom smelled terribly, and replacing the seat solved the problem.

  • Thanks for the replies.  I hope people still read this post so they can see my follow up and respond accordingly.

The smell isn't horrible, probably just toilet water smell.  I do clean under the rim as well.  I haven't noticed any leaking and I wipe the toilet everywhere including where it connects to the floor with clorox wipes (I clean the inside with some disposable scrubbing bubbles things, maybe I should use something else to clean the inside? suggestions?).  We don't have carpet in our bathroom but do have rugs, one in front of the sink and one that is made to fit around the front of the toilet, I was those probably once every 2 months or so.  We never let anything mellow, yuck.  It is possible the seats need to be replaced again.  Our house is 7yrs old, we're the only owners and we've only replaced the seats once.  We have white seats which I believe are wood with white paint and they do get kind of yucky on the underside of the seat, I do wipe this but its like the yuckies that get on it eat away at the paint or whatever and it's not smooth and new looking like the top of the seat.

Based on my replies to some of the suggestions that were brought up, what do you further suggest?  Thanks a bunch for your help.  I will get clorox tabs next time I'm at the grocery store, it can't hurt.

  • I am also going to recommend bleach tabs.  We have an old toliet that needs replaced (waiting to a bathroom remodel) and is pitted inside the bowl.  If it isn't cleaned regularly the pits collect gunk and it is disgusting.  With the bleach tabs I can forgo a cleaning and it still looks okay.

Just make sure it is a toliet that is flushed regularly (it sounds like it is) a bleach tab in an unused toliet can eat through the tank.

We don't have carpet in our bathroom but do have rugs, one in front of the sink and one that is made to fit around the front of the toilet.  I wash those probably once every 2 months or so.

In addition to what PP said, I'd recommend ditching the rug around your toilet, or at the very least, washing it more often.

I use a rug like this to catch any mess that a small child makes, but it is washed more than once a week. I think that's probably where the smell is coming from.

  • you might have to clean it more often.

like everyday or every other day.

I put Lysol Go to fullsize image

in the toilet they have this in a big bottle at Target. Just pour some in there

and swish it around with the toilet brush. It has disinfectant in it and it smells lemony!
