couch buying help!

Ok- we went to look at couches today (lots of Macy's gift cards from the wedding to use!)... and we narrowed it down to four.  I think 3 of the four are hardwood frames.  The rest is just going to be which I like the best and what color I decide to get!

Does anyone have microfiber now?  What is it like and how does it hold up?  And what about 2 cushions vs 3?  The couches are all about the same width...  Right now I am leaning towards #1 Auburn b/c I like a couple of the custom colors.  However, if I am really planning for the future- I wonder what type of fabric will hold up the best.  Any suggestions/comments would be greatly appreciated

1: Auburn, can get it in about a dozen different colors (but can't see those on the website).

2. Raja, only in brown or tan.

3. Haywood: the color shown and a brown.

4. Remo: can get this in a ton of colors for a little bit more $.

Our living room paint color (which we really don't want to change anytime soon), it seems like a richer color in person than in the photo-  the furniture in this picture was the previous owners/realtors: image

Re: couch buying help!

  • Have you sat in any of them?  I ask because I'm also looking for new couches.  After searching online, some that I thought I loved (based on looks), were not comfy to sit on after all.

  • We have a microfiber couch. It's a 2 cushion that DH bought 5 years ago when he got his first apartment. The fabric has help up very well. I've spilled things on it and it cleans up easily. I don't know if this is a 2-cushion thing, but the back cushions have deformed because of the way Devin sits on the couch so it looks funny. I can't wait to get a new couch, but I do like the fabric!
  • I went last month to look, and then we both went again today and actually sat in all of these.   They were all comfortable.

There were two that I really liked online- and when I sat in them last month- ugh, they were awful!

We each brought couches into the marriage... and they are both in the basement :)   Mine are comfortable but old and beat up with slipcovers on them, and his is not very comfortable, not very aesthetically pleasing, but in good shape.  This new one will go in the living room, and we won't probably use it as much as the ones in the basement.

  • I don't know about microfiber and how it holds up. I'm pretty sure DH's cousin has some microfiber furniture that has held up well - they just moved and will be using that furniture in the kids (triplets!) playroom because it is easier to clean.

When we bought our furniture - we weren't very smart about it. We didn't do much shopping around just chose furniture we liked and was comfortable. We didn't think too much about the future....the couch is HUGE! We're actually thinking about selling it (stinks cause we just got done paying it off!) before we move. But we'll see.

Anyway, I like all your choices! They're all very similar so I think it's just a matter of what fabric you want and what color.

  • I also have a 2 cushion microfiber couch.  The material is very easy to clean.  Anything spilled just wipes right up.  The only thing I don't like about the material is it full of static electricity in our dry house. We have a dog, and her hair just clings to the couch (even without her actually being on the couch).  I have to vacuum it often.  That being said, I still love the material, and wouldn't hesitate to buy a 2nd microfiber couch.

One of our 2 back cushions has lost it's shape from the way we sit as well.  It sags quite a bit, and makes the whole couch look sad and older than it is.  I have a friend who has a couch very similar to ours, and it looks the same way.  I often have to unzip the cushion to fluff up all the material so it looks somewhat normal again.

We have the static problem too!  DH and I have to touch hands before we kiss because we shock each other all the time!  Otherwise, I really like our couch!

  • I love our microfiber. We've had it 3 years and it has held up very well. It is also super easy to clean.

We do  too!  It's become a running joke between us.  It's our "spark"!

Haha...DH and I do the same thing with our microfiber.  I love it though.  Just spend the extra $ to get it scotch-guarded and you're good to go.  I spilled coffee all over mine and it just rolled off.  No stain or anything.

  • Well- after another hour in Macy's and much debate (and stopping at home first and measuring the walls), I decided on the Remo in coffee.  The sales rep tonight was a thousand times better and nicer than the sales rep we talked to yesterday!

I was 99% sure I wanted the Auburn one. I liked the style and the color (and color options).  However, it wasn't all that comfortable.  It was almost too deep.  Maybe if we were both a foot taller it would have been ok!

I was trying to decide between Remo & Raja.  The wall that the couch will eventually go on is only 110 inches.  Raja was 96 inches; Remo was 88. I think most of that difference was in the arms.  So Remo it is!  And Remo coffee and Raja stone are the same exact colors- but remo is "velvet" and raja is microfiber.  The velvet is basically microfiber with a longer pile.   And we will get the couch next week!

In case you are wondering- yes I overanalyze EVERYTHING.  It's a curse.

They didn't have a scotch guard option, but I did pay for their replacement/repair program.
