life insurance questions

Hi Girls,

I have been looking into life insurance policies as our house is being built, my birthday is coming up and we are thinking of TTC next winter. I am so unfamiliar with this stuff and had a few questions.

1. Is $150k a good amount or should I do $250k...I can afford either, just not sure which to do.

 2. I was looking at 30 year term life...is this a good option?

3. Any idea what a good price range is for an annual premium?

4. Any good companies you recommend?

Any other info you think would be helpful to share would be great!

 thank you!

Re: life insurance questions

  • I would get the higher amount. Ideally you would want it to pay off your mortgage and other debts as well as any funeral expenses. It would also be nice if there was some leftover to help DH(or additional family) along after your passing.

As for price range, I have no idea. I have i think 5x my salary through my company and its cheap as hell. But, I work for an insurance company that SELLS life insurance, so i get a HUGE break on it.

I dont know anything about the rest of it. I just take what they give me.

  • Ditto Kim on getting the higher amount if you can afford it.

As for premium rates - not quite sure. I don't have my own separate policy (I have it through work) but DH has a policy. His grandfather start it for him so i don't know all the details. I want to say it's $100k or something to that effect....nothing major. Anyway, we just started taking over payments and we pay $75 - every quarter I think.

  • Definitely check to see if either of you can get it through work.   My work pays for life insurance equal to double my salary, and I can opt in to buy additional coverage for myselfe, my husband and in the future, our kids.  I think price of the optional term life from work will increase if I ever leave this job.

I know it's not something we ever want to think about, but it is really smart to be thinking of it!  I have a friend who lost her husband early, and having life insurance saved her and her kids.   They got married young (20ish) and he passed away 6-7 years later.  I think he was a bricklayer or carpenter, and she was working odd jobs at the time.

  • thank you girls! I think DH can get it through work, I will have to have him look into it.
  • The only thing is that I've heard if you have coverage through work, you could lose it if you change (or lose) your job. I don't know if some policies allow you to continue on the plan after you leave the job you acquire the insurance through? Kim, maybe you can clarify!

No, i have no idea. I don't work for the life insurance side of my company...but i should probably check that out! I just assumed id lose it if i lost/left my job.
