f/u to sooo pumped, now not so pumped

Just found out I do not qualify for FMLA and will have to take an unpaid leave of absence. Honestly, almost started bawling. Had such a crap weekend with the flu or whatever friggin virus took over my system.

I've barely eaten in two days (and what I ate, have thrown up). and this news just wasn't exciting. So much for my long maternity leave. I now have to take to the union to try to get donated sick days.

uh.

  • and my union rep said if I have to go unpaid it means I lose my insurance as well. Turning out to be awesome!

So much for me wanting all these snow days.

  • Oh no, that is really awful news, especially to get while you're battling sickness- so sorry! Keeping my fingers crossed for you that something great comes out of your meeting with the union!

  • That totally stinks.  I really hope that you get donated sick time.  Does your employer not offer Short-term disability?

  • Boo.  How do you not qualify for FMLA?  I thought it was a federal program that applied to everyone - it doesn't pay you, but it protects you job- and benefits-wise.

You have to be at your job for a year Sad There are several requirements to qualify unfortunately.

Tripin I'm so sorry Sad That stinks and I hope things work out!

  • What a bummer. I took 11 weeks unpaid but I already knew it would be so it wasn't a shock. Just think about holding that babe!!
  • I'm sorry, that totally sucks!  I worried about that when I saw Sweetpea's comment  on your other post :(

  • I'm so sorry about your leave...or lack of leave as it turns out.  I hope the union members will help you out with some donated leave. Maternity leave in the US totally bites!

  • What a huge blow!  I'm so sorry and I hope people are generous with their leave donations!
  • I'm so sorry  :o(.  I'm crossing my fingers for you to score with the sick days pool though - at least there's still hope.  FWIW I also don't get paid, but like shuga I also knew well ahead of time.  At least you have a few months notice to figure things out (not that it makes it any easier to digest the news).  I know for us, the tax return is going to be a big help to pay for my leave, otherwise we'd be screwed!

Erin, at the time you have LO, you would have not been at your current position for a year??? I don't believe that one bit.  I say go back to your central office and discuss again.  That doesn't make any sense

  • Sorry, I wanted you to know because it was a serious blow to us too and trying to find the money was tough (plus Ed Techs don't have a "sick bank" so I didn't have anyone to ask for sick days) and we were definitely stretching the budget while I was home until Josh started working at camp...

Jess, a teacher's official hire date is the night of the school board meeting that approves the hiring of the position... the earliest an approval usually comes is May if the teacher was hired at the end of a school year, usually June, but most over the summer hires happen at the July or August school board meeting so unless Erin got hired REALLY early (and I can't remember when you got hired) it wouldn't be a full year.

  • Thanks for the heads up Kristen, I didn't see your earlier post, but now I see it ;)

Yeah, my technical date was July, so I am 2 months short of a year. I'm going to chat with the sick day union rep tomorrow and it looks like I just might squeak it out - maybe. Our school has a HUGE sick bank that no one uses, so I'm hoping they are generous. But they think it'll more or less be around 30 days ::fingers crossed::.

Right now my greatest concern is that either A the baby comes early or B we have so many freakin snow days that my sick days and sick bank days aren't enough. I can handle a few weeks unpaid, but if I have to go on unpaid, I lose my insurance and me and both babies are going to be on that. So that could be a big problem.

Hopefully tomorrow I'll feel better after chatting with the union guy. I'm just so annoyed at our country for making it impossible to be a family anymore. It's too expensive to be a one income family, but they think women can magically just hop back to work full time and ship the kids to daycare. Blah.

I'll be over it in a day or two :)

  • I totally agree that the US is not set up to support families.  I get all pissy about that every few weeks or so  Angry

If your due date is July though, won't you be on summer vacation anyway until September?  Or does this school go through the summer?  Because if so, it seems that you wouldn't really be taking any FMLA days until September actually hits, which would be the year mark?  I'm sure I'm missing something because that seems too good to be true.
