My husband wants another dog ...

We're taking MIL border terrier next week (dog has been living with SIL and BIL since MIL passed 11 months ago).  He thinks we need a second dog, a golden lab (because he always wanted one growing up) so that our border will have a "friend".

He's so excited about the thought, but I think we should wait and see how we do with one dog before we add another one to the mix.  That said, I love labs (my family was a lab family).

Anyone have multiple dogs, especially very different breeds?

  • Just other little dogs.  Maybe I'll have to take her to a dog park and see how she does.

  • We have two.  We adopted them as puppies, Bailey in April 2007 and Gracie in January 2008.  We now regret this decision. Gracie went from litter to having Bailey, but Bailey was found as a stray and then was our only dog for his first year.

Gracie is totally dependent on Bailey.  She has serious issues when they are separated, even for something as not fun as a bath or nail clipping.  Like she sits outside of the bathroom and cries for him.

Bailey, on the other hand, loves to be away from Gracie and has developed some fairly constant aggression issues (growling, shoving Gracie off furniture, pushing Gracie out of the way, etc.).

And poor Gracie, who has but 25% of a brain, has no idea she's so hated.  Also, Gracie has separation anxiety issues, so I'm terrified of how she'll react when Bailey dies.  To the point we've discussed having a third dog when it comes "time" to help ease the blow for Gracie.  But then we're back to having two dogs.  When all I really want is none.  Ugh.

While we have dog issues, it doesn't mean you will.  I think that if you have room in your hearts/homes to adopt another dog, you will only be rewarded with tons of wags and love.

  • We have 2 dogs....one is an Aussie Lab Mix (siggy pic) and the other is a good old fashion American pedigree Mutt....but if I had to guess, he's Lab/Pit.  We got them about a year apart and they are the best of friends.

I honestly felt that after having 1 dog, adding a second was really easy....we were already doing everything for one anyway.   :)

     Good luck!

  • While we have two of the same breed (Siberian Husky) they couldn't be more night and day. Their personalities are so different. The only thing they have in common is they are both batshitcrazy. I love them to pieces though! I agree with Kissyfur, adding a second dog wasn't really a huge deal for us. I would even say it's better since they entertain each other (and us in the process).

I would recommend getting into a routine with the first dog then adding the second once you are comfortable. I think it really helped that Stella was on such a routine schedule when we got Emma. Emma just kind of went along with everything and learned a lot from Stella. Though I will admit that I rrrreeeaaaaalllllllllllyyyyyy questioned myself when we got Emma and wondered what the heck we had gotten ourselves into. This was the adjustment period where my strong Alpha dogs had to learn to get along and learn their order. Everyone is happy now and I wouldn't have it any other way!
