Should I take this more seriously?

Apparently we're getting a historically massive ice/snow storm. They're doing a press conference on the news right now about it all. Talking about the potential for at least 100,000 people losing power, up to an inch of ice and 12 inches of snow, using four wheel drive cars to transport doctors and nurses to hospitals. A friend took a picture of the grocery store and the egg aisle was completely wiped out.

I'm kind of laughing and at the same time I'm kind of going, "Uhhhh do I need to get a bunch of stuff to be prepared for this?"

Re: Should I take this more seriously?

  • I would say that as long as you have enough food to last you several days (stuff that doesn't necessarily need to be cooked in case of a power outage) and plenty of warm clothes and blankets then you will probably be fine.  There is a panic at the stores every time it is supposed to snow any appreciable amount here.  So far I haven't ever made an extra trip to stock up and have survived just fine.
  • i would get prepared. especially with flashlights. i didnt have power for five days. when i went to hd after the fact (it was a hurricane so driving was an option) there was nothing to buy. i eventually found a miner's light that i stuck om my head and used to read and find my way to the bathroom at night. i had to eat out every meal. also stock up on non electronic entertainment like playing cards. it can get very boring without power, and especially at night without anything to see buy. it's even darker than usual because street lights will be out too. if you do stock up on food get stuff that doesnt need to be cooked or refrigerated. yes, people panic but it's good to be prepared nonetheless because it can really suck if you are not. also have backup plan in case you dont have heat. lots of ppl in md are without power now and eventually our homes get very cold. you may have to go elsewhere or check into a hotel.

This. When we get 3-5 inches people bombard the stores to stock up. Just make sure you have candles/ flashlights hehe

  • Jane where are you again? Ice storms are way worse then snow bc 4wd or not your screed with ice. I def make sure you are prepared for power outages and have food that doesn't need to be cooked unless you have gas appliances. Also if type on a well make sure you have water.

  • Other than food/water/shelter, I would def make sure you have enough batteries for flashlights and/or candles. Your ice storm is coming our way and is due to hit us on Wednesday. Aren't they talking tornado warnings for you too?

I was going to add the part about batteries.

I wouldn't put it past St. Louis to have completely bizarre weather like that. We always get the craziness.

  • the think to worry about with losing power (which happens a lot when there's ice storms bc of ice on power lines) is your pipes freezing. try to keep a slow drip going if you lose power on your fawcetts to keep water moving through them. when a pipe burst, it sucks. not only do you have no heat or electricity...but you can't use the toilet and there's typically a mess to clean up.
