My dogs grew up on Pedigree food. Not the most expensive brand of food out there but I thought was still decent. This weekend I needed to buy food for my dogs so I took one to PetSmart on Saturday for a treat. (Not DeNiro, he's still got time to serve in the crate says the vet) Well I was overwhelmed with the dog food section. I ended up going with a huge bag of Nutro Max for Adult dogs. Saturday night they both devoured their food. I thought, "hey, the really love it". Well, from yesterday afternoon until this morning at 6am. DeNiro (of course, as if he hasn't been through enough) has had the worse case of diarrhea ever. Like every two hours he starts panting and I know he needs to go and of course he can't go down the stairs outside on his own because of his back, so I have to get all bundled up and take him out. He actually threw up too in the middle of the night. Poor thing, he seemed to be feeling a little better this morning when I left for work. Question.....what should I feed him tonight. White rice??
Anyway, I guess its back to Pedigree in our house. Anyone feed their dogs Nutro Max for Adult dogs cause I got a 40lb bag up for grabs.....
Re: What to feed my dog to bind him up?? TMI
Did you do a gradual switch or all at once? Nutro is a higher quality dog food than pedigree, so it could be the richness messed with them, similar to humans eating rich food if they've never had it. You could try doing a gradual method to make the switch over to Nutro if you want to go that route and didn't do gradual the first time.
You can do rice. Pumpkin is a good binding ingredient - get some canned pumpkin from the grocery store - just not pumpkin pie filling - actual canned pumpkin.
When Kona has digestive issues, I usually go the rice, chicken, and green bean route - not that they are really binding, just easy to digest.
Good luck!
Kristen, switching the food quickly on them like that causes the big D. I think they say to mix 1/4 of the new food with 3/4 of the old food and work the ratio up so that in two weeks-ish you're feeding the new food. I would start this tonight to try to settle their systems!
Mixing some rice in might help. I usually add a tablespoon of pumpkin to the food here when they could use some solidifying (or help with the anal gland expression, which is a joy of having hounds!).
Not to be all crazy dog lady on you or anything, but neither of those foods rate very high nutritionally. Check out http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/ if you're interested.
I found a food that's rated pretty high at 5-star but not too expensive (Canidae). My sister feeds it to her frenchie, too (from when they lived with us) and he looks fantastic on it - nice and solid and shiny but not chunky.
It took 5 failed IUIs and a failed IVF, but our FET worked!

Our baby girl was born on April 27, 2011!
I know!!! I just googled the Nutro and now I'm scared to death!!! I think I'll just toss the food now. Thanks for the link!!
Really don't have much more to add but when my boys get the big D we typically do white rice and boiled chicken. Also, if you did switch the food cold turkey that is probably what caused the issue and not necessarily the food. Amazingly my dogs who will eat the grossest things in the world have really sensitive stomachs when it comes to switching foods.
Following up with what Jill said, if you are looking for a better quality food the website she gave you is great! We used to feed Nutra Max but after further research weren't impressed with it at all. About 2 years ago, we switched to Innova and have been really happy! Less tummy issues, better coat, etc.
This website/place is actually a local company (North Kingstown area) that you can get most of the really good quality food at:

No more advice, but I just wanted to say if you are looking for a better food we feed Wellness (rated at 5 stars on dogfoodanalysis.com) and it is easily accessible at Petco or Whole Foods.
Hope your man is feeling better soon!
Def Rice and boiled chicken. While pumpkin soothes the belly for them, if gives my Dakota more D, and instead it's orange! hahah
We did a slow transition to Canidae and the dogs love it. It takes less to fill them up, so follow the directions on the actual package so that they don't eat til they pass out lol
Another thing to consider is the switch to Grain Free formula of anything you pick. Dogs can't digest grains properly, and it's usually used as a filler in alot of dog food. My dogs were always biting their paws or scratching, and since the switch to grain free neither of those are a problem in our home.
Good luck!!
Ditto this - Kona has super bad gas on any foods with grain fillers. Now that we switched, it's thankfully gone.
