Letters of reference

I just applied for a job online, and after applying, I received an email telling me that in order to complete my application, I needed to submit 3 letters of reference within 5 days of my application. So basically by Friday.

I feel like contacting my references to ask them to do this makes me look bad as it is such short notice. But am I being too sensitive? Is this a normal amount of time to get out reference letters?

Re: Letters of reference

  • Did it say in the job posting that you had to provide the references when you applied? I think it's short notice to ask people for letters, depending on your relationship with them. If any of them are friends, that's more doable, but if you asked someone now to furnish the letter by friday, they might be annoyed.

    Good luck!

  • Get thee to LinkedIn and ask for references.  That way, you can always direct them to your profile for immediate references, and if they want more detail, you can go back for more info.  Personally, I think the recommendations are the best part of LinkedIn.
  • The time to solicit letters of reference is before you need them. You should be prepared to furnish them immediately.

I think it's important to aquire at least 3 letters of reference from each job you intend to list on a future resume. At least you should seek to add new ones every few years for this purpose. I have a file full of glowing letters. Oh, and networking is critical, because you must remain in contact with these people and make sure they always hold you in the same esteem as when they signed the letter.

This is good advice but I have a question for you. If I am collecting letters in advance, when someone asks for them, wouldn't I be giving away my only copies? Or am I wrong in assuming that any letters I receive should be sealed with a signature on the envelope flap? How exactly does this work? Clearly I am clueless. I've never had a job ask for reference letters, so this is all new to me.
