Dress Drama (long)

Back in September I sent my wedding dress to have it preserved from a high profile company in New York.  The company came highly recommended from a number of sources including upscale dress shops.

Fast forward and I got the dress back late January. It was supposed to take 3 months but they claimed they were having high volume and therefore would take four.  Well, they called before sending it back saying that when they cleaned it some of the glue that was holding flowers onto the waist melted and put a few spots on the silk.  They told me it wasn't noticable and just affected the shine of the fabric.   Well I took the dress out of the box and there were over 200 spots all over the dress.  So needless to say the dress is ruined.

I called them and come to find out they didn't inform the owner of the company what happened to my dress.  Addtionally, I found out that not only did the glue just melt but all of the emblishments competely came off and they had to reattach the flowers and beads to the dress.  Guess we found out why it took an additional month.  Anyways I had to send it back so the owner can see it and determine what they are going to do.  Sorry didn't realize it would be this long, thanks for letting me rant.

While I am working this out I was trying to determine what to do with this dress?  Does anyone have any suggestions?  I feel horrible just throwing it away but keeping it in this state doesn't make sense.

Re: Dress Drama (long)

  • It sounds like the whole thing is ruined.  If there seems to be sufficient fabric that is salvagable and you plan to have kids and plan to have them christened, you could always save it to have a christening gown made.  Other than that, I'd probably just give it away.
  • I don't have any suggestions but ugh, that sucks :(  Sorry your dress is ruined.  Do you think they will reimburse you some money for their mistake?

  • Thanks for the suggestion about trying to salvage some of the fabric.

As for what they are going to do, I'm not sure.  Back when I first sent the dress in their website stated that if anything happened they would get you a new dress.  Now the website states that they have the dress insured for the replacement value.  I'm hoping to not only get the money I paid for the preservation but also the value of the dress.

I never had thought about doing a trash the dress session but its something my wedding planner suggested.  So I guess that is always a possibility.
