Vacuum

We have only had ours for about 1 1/2 and it basically just pushes dirt around and isnt picking anything up anymore. Do you love your vacuum? How long have you had it? I dont want to spend a ton of money, but I also don't want to buy a new one every year. HELP!

Re: Vacuum

  • We bought an Oreck for about 350$ after tax in 2007.  If you're interested in one, see if your local Oreck dealer will give you a discount for brining in your old, broken vac--that's what we did.  It picks up everything (except liquid, of course!) on both carpet and hard surfaces.  It's only about 8 lbs and has a light at the bottom so you can get a better look at what you're picking up.  The only thing some may see as a negative is that it is not bagless (this is something we don't mind since it means everything is contained).

  • I have a hand-me-down Kenmore (whirlpool) canister vac and I like it.  I'm not in love with it but it does a decent job.  We have a separate beater bar that cleans rugs and carpet like a champ.  The only problem I have with ours is that since we have a dog that sheds and a vacuum with bags, we go through them pretty quickly.  Occasionally the hose gets clogged with hair but that is easily fixed (with a pipe snake.  *grin*) It works much better than any upright I've ever used anywhere.
  • I haven't owned a vacuum in over 5 years.  Embarrassed

(To be fair, I've had nothing but hardwood and tile, so the swiffers do just fine.)

  • I got this one a few weeks ago and love it! Easy to use/put together. Great suction. A little heavy when trying to do the stairs, but I don't mind!

  • After our wedding, we got our Bissel off our registry for 10% off.  I love it because it's designed for pet hair specifically.  It doesn't have a bag, just the plastic container to dump, which is awesome.  And it's disgusting how much hair it picks up!

It's not an Oreck or a Dyson which (to me) are crazy expensive.  But it's still a brand name and it works really well!

Bissel is a perfectly good company.  My parents owned a Bissel carpet cleaner for over 20 years.  In fact, I think the only reason they got rid of it is because they installed tile and hardwood.

  • We have a Roomba, which is wonderful.  You push a button, and it goes around and vacuums everything while you go off and do something else.  The only minor issue is that it occasionally gets stuck on a piece of furniture, and emits a pitiful wail until you come and free it.
  • Ugh! I"m following this! We still have DH's from his bachelor days, which I swear makes everything smell like stale smoke and beer.

This made me laugh out loud!  The mental image of your poor stranded vacuum is just really entertaining.  Big Smile

  • We have a dyson. It was a wedding gift from my grandma - she wanted to buy something big and we didn't need china or crystal since I have heirloom sets of both.

It is definitely as awesome as they hype surrounding it. But it is $$$ and something I never would have bought for myself. We did get it for the lowest possible price, though, by waiting until it was on sale at Best Buy and having my cousin-in-law who worked there buy it for us with his employee discount. If you have the hook-up, take advantage!
