Negotiating Salary for Promotion?

Hi- I'm expecting an offer this week for a senior level job in my current dept. I'll still report to my current boss- she called me on Friday to tell me I got the Sr. position.  She told me what my new pay would be and to be honest, I'm disappointed with it.

It's 15% over what I currently make but I was hoping for at least 20%.  I firmly believe I was underpaid to begin with.  I'd like to counter offer.  Should I do it before I get the offer in writing?  Does it reflect poorly on me if I counter offer?  Their offer is just below industry standards.

I will have much more responsibility and two direct reports with this new position.

thoughts?  TIA!

Re: Negotiating Salary for Promotion?

  • "Jane, I'm looking forward to working with Bill and Jose and the (other city) office.  This is a good fit for the company's objectives and what I bring to the table.  The salary I'm looking for is $_______, which the market more than supports.  Let's talk about the options on salary."

    Or something to that effect.

Practice saying it until you're sick of it.  It will be much easier to say to your manager.  If you don't ask, you don't get - just like you wouldn't tell a store owner that you'd like to pay more for that pair of pants, they're not going to tell you that they'd gladly pay more than you're asking.
