Still no snow, but everything is closed.

We're supposed to have a blizzard.  It's not even snowing yet though.  They have closed EVERYTHING for tomorrow already though.  Even Keith's work, which has never EVER closed (literally) is closed tomorrow.  Also, my mom's work closed, which is a clinic, which also NEVER closes.  But, I guess those 14" we got on Christmas Eve 2009 scared everyone enough, so now they're saying we might get 18" and it's insane around here.  We went to the grocery store after work and it was just stupid.  They were out of onions!  WTF?

Missing our little turkey.

Re: Still no snow, but everything is closed.

  • Welcome to my winter. 2 years ago there was an awful storm, it was similar to the blizzard of 78. Serious craziness, kids were trapped on buses for hours, traffic was at a standstill and people were running out of gas in the middle of the road, it literally took 4 hours to get 3 miles. Since then RI has been overly cautious. At this point the kids will be in school until July.

And the grocery shopping is nuts. I always go on Mondays, usually its quieter, but today was a zoo. I was fighting people to get down the aisle. It was nuts. I felt awful for the employees.

Enjoy your day off tomorrow though! I love when it snows, it quiets everything down and is kind of peaceful.

  • I am SO excited about the snow!  (Provided the electricity stays on.)  It just so happens that Matt is off tomorrow (even though his restaurant is open) so we get to spend the whole day relaxing tomorrow.  So, so, so excited!

  • I am so NOT excited about this snow.  I am at a conference about 250 miles from  home.  Our boss told us we can leave early, but early is tomorrow at noon and there is supposed to already be plenty of freezing rain by then.  I just want to be home and safe.  I get super stressed over bad weather driving and I know I won't sleep tonight being so anxious to get home tomorrow.

Iowa City Snow Protocol: Drive to Hy-Vee. Do not look for other cars or people in the parking lot. Just go. Follow the same philosophy once inside. Make sure your cart takes up the whole aisle. Don't move out of the way for other people. You don't want someone taking that last can of Spam. Disregard the fact that you have lived in Iowa for 40 years and have survived every other snow storm without incident.

So freaking true! We had a little snow on the road and people were literally going 10MPH, I was weaving in and out of cars like a mad woman. I am dreading my commute to work tomorrow.

  • We just watched a fire truck go sliding down the ice on our street, but still no snow yet.  DH hit the grocery store on the way home and he said there was almost nothing left on the shelves.  I keep thinking perversely to myself how freaking hilarious it would be if there were to be no snow at all.  I wonder how many of the people getting all panicky would feel really stupid.

I sure hope this is the last of it...I'm so over the white stuff, it's not even funny!

  • We have no prospect for snow here anytime soon. *insert sad face* I would love for DH to get a snow day.

This happens here ALL the time, and will probably happen tomorrow. It's supposed to be 38... how does it snow when it's above freezing?? Wait, that's right, it doesn't!

And originally they said we could get up to 3' tomorrow and now we're getting at most an inch. whopee! I love driving up the island in crappy conditions.

  • Alecat - I'd be glad to figure out a way to box some up and send it to you.
  • I have to laugh at the stories you ladies are telling about the grocery store being so busy because of snow.  I used to work in a grocery store and let me tell you...people used to come in a buy heaping carts of groceries.  Yes, you read that right.  Carts.  It was ridiculous!  We were so busy I could barely get anything done in my department (dairy and frozen food) because I was up front cashiering and bagging.  And then of course I would have customers mad at me because the milk and eggs were either out or low.  Stop freaking out and buying 5 gallons at a time!  So glad I do not work there anymore!

I will also, happily, contribute some.  Lots even.

My company offered to put me up in a hotel tonight/tomorrow because I have to be at work regardless of the weather.  Which is allegedly going to bring us another foot of snow, with ice mixed in.  I wasn't going to, having just spent a week away, but I may change my mind.

Mother Nature needs to take her meds.
