I need to get my rings re-appraised for insurance purposes (as in, I've been horrible and not had them insured yet!). My e-ring was purchased in the UK and I have the basic information on it but the value is in GBP, so that does me little good. The wedding band was purchased here, but it was from our family jeweler and I think he gave me a deal on it (custom made), so I really don't have enough information to provide for insurance - which I believe requires a much more in-depth evaluation and description.
Who would you recommend? Arthur's would charge over $200 to draw up an appraisal for both (maybe $250?). Is that reasonable? Are there other family or locally owned jewelers that would be better? I hesitate to go to a chain or mall jeweler and would prefer going somewhere rooted in the community. St.Paul/Roseville area preferred.
Also, if you have insurance recs, that would be great too! Did you get a separate policy or put a rider on your homeowners?
Thanks!
Re: Jewelry appraisal recs?
Ask your agent for a rec? Mine sent me to a place in Edinda which did mine for free.
My ins is thru State Farm - my agent is Tom Saurer - he is great! State Farm does jewelry on a seperate personal policy.
I was super nervous b/c it's a 100 year old heirloom ring. My then coworker knew the appraiser at RF Jeweler in Highland Park so we went, he went away from a bit, came back, and it was $75... but in 2002. Inflation I suppose.
Speaking on this topic, it makes me wonder if heirloom rings continue to increase in value uniquely because of their age? I make antique people super happy because they love the old diamond cut and quality.
Also have State Farm and our agent referred us to a person in Edina. What is nice is you don't leave your rings, they don't send them out. The appraisal is done right then and there. First item was free and a fee for additional items.
Gold 'N Treasures on Grand Ave in St. Paul is wonderful. Love them there. I don't know if they charge for appraisals, but they are super friendly and they really know their stuff. Great prices too.
