applying "cold"

Have any of you submitted cover letters / resumes to companies who didn't have any job openings listed? Have you ever success with that?

Re: applying "cold"

  • Yes, but it was a long time ago. There's a low ROI, but it's worth a shot as long as you're trying other avenues.

  • Yes. Last year around this time my husband and I were in the process of buying a house in his hometown. I applied to job listings for weeks with no success, so I started sending cover letters and resumes to all of the large companies in the area. I got a call for an interview within a week and I was offered the job the day after my interview. I'm sure this is rare, but it worked for me. Good luck!

  • I did.

This was back in 2004, so I don't know how things might be now.

I was a Sophomore in college, & just came back home from college far away to go back to the Community College. I applied at temp agencies, places with Help Wanted signs, & got nothing.

My friend worked at JC Penney, & told me to try there. I thought NO WAY! They just let go of their Holiday help! January is SLOW in retail!

But I didn't have much to lose. I went in the next day, went to the office, asked for the hiring lady & told her I was friends with "A". She had me apply.

& I got hired the next day. I worked there 4 years.

  • That's how I got my current job.  I didn't know if they had any openings, but I sent in my resume and cover letter and a a week or two later got a call for an interview.  Almost 10 years later I'm still there (although I've had a variety of different positions in that time).

  • Yes. I have had enormous success persuading other companies to hire my company by sending out unsolicited proposals.

Even before I had a company, I found work this way- I decided what company I wanted to work for, and phoned the owner first thing in the morning. I introduced myself and launched into my speech, he interrupted me and said "I know who you are; you can start Monday (clearly it helped to have an excellent reputation in the industry).
