another CD Q - brand/type and why?

What brand or style of CDs do you use, and why do you like them? Details please.  Geeked (I understand that a lot of the decision will depend on my LO, but I'm still trying to make sense of it all.)

How many do you have, and how often do you have to do laundry?  Do you find it difficult, or is it worth it knowing the savings (more than just $)?  I'm coming across so many negative reactions when I mention that I want to at least try CD-ing.  Am I really that crazy to think it's possible while still working full time?  I'm also seeing people on Craigs List selling their stashes, and I wonder how big of a collection is needed to really make it work successfully.

Re: another CD Q - brand/type and why?

  • I completely understand the whole negative first response thing.  From my mother to Abby's original daycare we got the bug eyed, "you're doing what?".  The next question usually is, "how do you like doing all that laundry".  It's really about educating yourself and others on how EASY CD really is.  The options have come so far in such little time that most people haven't caught on.  The laundry part shouldn't be a factor because it's two maybe three small loads a week. There is NO Swishing, rinsing, etc that people think of.

For an infant, diapers go right into the wash - no rinsing necessary because their poop is water soluble.   I had 10-12 kissauluvs with thirsty covers and 18 blue penguin prefolds.  Once Abby was about 12 pounds we moved to BG 3.0's which we've been using ever since.  I have a diaper sprayer to wash off the poop, but I prefer using the flushable liners.  In the end it's about the same cost, and the liners are so much easier.  We have 24ish BG's.  Most of these I purchases used off Jillian's drawers and the prefolds I scored off of freecycle.

It's helpful to go to a class or if you know people who do it to do a show and tell.  If you're every in my area, stop on by!

You can make your collection as big or small as you need.  There are some adorable prints out there, but doing cloth for us is partly about saving money.  The nice thing about cloth is that the resale is still generally pretty good.

You're not crazy - I think most mom's on here work full time and make it work.  It just becomes part of routine.

Bottom line - when I tell people I haven't had to buy diapers or wipes ( we use 30 cloth wipes I made) in over 14 months, it sort of shuts them up :-)  I don't tell them I've had to buy a few to cover diaper rash.   And really, bottom, bottom line...fluffy but is just so cute!!

  • I haven't once regretted our choice to CD, and Owen is almost 2.  Every time we use disposables (which we do when we travel), I feel awful about how much trash we create.  And pre-solids, we had blowouts in disposables all the time while traveling, and we didn't have them in CDs.  It's really very very easy to cloth diaper, and the laundry is not that big a deal.    When Owen was a newborn, we did the Kissaluv rental from Nell's Natural Baby, and we'll do the same with the new baby.  When Owen was 3 months old, we purchased our own diapers.  Our stash consisted of 2 Rumperooz pocket diapers, 13 BG 3.0s, and 4 fitteds (mix of hemp and bamboo, one DryBees and 3 BabyBeeHinds) with three Thirsties covers.  (We use the BGs during the day and the fitteds for overnight.  The fitteds are SUPER absorbent.)  Just recently I added 6 more BG 4.0s in anticipation of the baby, but I haven't put them into action yet...so we've been using 19 diapers and doing laundry every 2-3 days.

I don't have a diaper sprayer, so I do swish sometimes, but that too is no big deal.

We decided on the BGs and the fitteds after doing a 2-week trial from the DiaperLab of an assortment of lots of brands.  I love the Rumperooz even more, but they're more expensive, so I stuck with having just a couple.  During the trial we wound up eliminating a lot of brands that I thought we'd like.  If you can do a trial, I'd recommend it, because fit has a lot to do with the kid.

  • We use Flips, and love them!  We have about 14 covers and maybe 25 inserts? but we are also diapering two so you could probably cut it in half for one baby!  I do laundry every 2 days and because of our water/washer I do a rinse, a wash with RnG detergent, and then two rinses... which takes a while because I usually forget I am doing it, lol!

We got the Flips because of cost and while I am sure that BGs might be easier, I like the Flips because I spent $200 and now have enough to CD them full time whereas it would have been closer to $500 to get diapers for them.

The Flips are nice because you can use their inserts or prefolds or another brand of inserts and just use the covers... They are AIOs so the boys only ever need those covers...

Let me know if you want to know anything else or if you are ever in the Sanford area and want to check them out!

  • We started with grobaby's using the disposable inserts. I love the concept (which is the same as the flip), but she just wet so much it wouldn't hold her. So we switched to bg 4.0 and add a hemp babies doubler for night. Holds her awesome!! I might pick up some flips now that they come with a newborn insert. We have to use both inserts right now or she leaks. I love my cloth and the laundry is by far my easiest load. Good luck with whatever you choose!

  • We use Bum Genuis 3.0's (and one 4.0). I think we have 21 diapers at this point and we do laundry every 2 or 3 days. We tried GDiapers when he was a newborn, but they didn't work out and I was way too overwhelmed with our other issues to make sense of something else. So we didn't start CD'ing until he was a year old and I chose BGs because they seemed like the most popular ones and the easiest for me to figure out.

I definitely get some negative feedback from people at times but once I show them how simple they are everyone, even my very skeptical mother, thinks they are great.  I agree that it is my easiest laundry and I LOVE not spending money or worrying about buying disposables. We use disposables for travel and when we need to use Desitin and I think a case of 100 or so lasted us over 9 months.

  • Right now we are primarily using Flips.  While I like the system, I don't love it yet. It's not great at containing breastfed baby poop which often gets on the cover and needs to be washed. I have 4 covers and 20 of the inserts.  If we had 2 more covers this issue would be solved. They also seem really wide in the crotch for our 11 pound girl.  We invested in the Flips because my husband didn't want to keep buying different sized diapers and the Flips are reasonably priced. They also have disposable inserts which we'll use for traveling. We also have a few Fuzzibunz perfect sized pockets that I really like.  They're cute, easy, and keep everything in, but more pricey.

I really dislike prefolds.  Snappis require more manual dexterity than I have at 3am and if you don't get the prefold stuffed securely inside the cover you wind up with a wet baby, wet clothes, and wet whatever else the baby is on.

For the newborn phase I thought the Kissaluvs (KL0s) did the best job of containing poop without being too bulky, but it's more than I wanted to spend for the few weeks that the KL0s will fit.

We wash diapers every other day and it's really no big deal.  They can go in the wash before work or after, whenever you have more time.  If you do it in the morning it gives time for line drying covers and anything that didn't dry completely.

I really like cloth diapering. We started out with a trial and disposables when we brought V home from the hospital and then bought the Flips.  I'll probably try a few other types of diapers to have in addition to the Flips mostly for the cute factor, but I'm a sucker that way.

    Good luck whatever you decide.

  • In the beginning we did the rental program with Nell's natural babies, just in case. I got the fitted kissaluvs and the thirsties duo covers. DH was totally behind my decision and in his words , "I'm going to be getting closer to poop then I'd like so what's the difference?" I then purchased 25 BG 3.0s' and was much happier. I found these to be easier to use. FUnny thing was about 2 weeks in I whined a little about the diapers but DH kept me strong. I'm so glad too. I had to use a Pampers Sensitive and within 5 minutes she had burn marks on her legs from the diaper :(

I do laundry every other day. I have a diaper sprayer, 2 pail liners and 2 diaper wet bags. Lots of people thought I was crazy but it's so easy. It's so much cheaper in the end and the padded diaper has saved DD from a lot of hard falls :)
