BC recommendation? Not sure what the problem is with mine

I'm currently on tri-sprintec, and I hate it.  I take it religiously, same time every day, not skipping any... and in the middle of the second week, I start spotting.  Not really sure I would even call it that, because it's heavy enough that I need pads, it's more like I have my period for three weeks out of the month.  I was on regular sprintec before and it wasn't nearly this bad, anyone recommend their pill for me?  I was thinking of trying Seasonale, to make up for the fact that H and I can only have sex for one week out of four as it stands now!

Re: BC recommendation? Not sure what the problem is with mine

  • Maybe the varying levels of hormones are making you spot?  I looked it up on my nursing drug book and all BC have "spotting" as a side effect.

I have been on Seasonale (jolessa is the generic and much cheaper) for about 4 yrs now and love it.  The contact estrogen levels can lead to some dryness issues, but that can be fixed by using lubricant.  Not having hormonal mood swings and only 4 periods a year is fabulous.  I did have spotting, though, for about the first 6 months that was controlled with a light pad.

  • I'm on Seasonique right now but it'll switch to Jolessa once this pack is over. I haven't had any spotting which is why I stopped taking Loestrin 24le; I started spotting every month. I love it as well!

  • There also could be that the amount of estrogen released is not strong enough for your body.  I had the same problem when I was on the pill and had to take the strongest bc pill offered.  I am now on mirena and that seems to be working for me.  Also you may think about the patch too.  I hope this helps.
  • If you're spotting that much, I'd guess that the level of hormones in that particular pill aren't strong enough for you. It sounds like your body is trying to override that pill, which means it's not working like it should. You need to call your doctor asap and let them know what's going on - and in the meantime, I'd use condoms if I were you.

  • I recently had the Paragard IUD placed.  It hurt like a mother when they put it in, but since then I've had no complaints.  I kicked the hormonal stuff because I couldn't find one that didn't cause crazy depression or weight gain or facial hair growth, and I couldn't deal with it.

So non-hormonal, no-fuss BC did it for me.  I think it's worth checking out,  And you can keep it in for up to 10 years, or get it removed whenever.

  • That happened to me with a different BCP before.  I just told my doctor what was going on and he prescribed a different on with a stronger dose of hormones.  I've been fine ever since.
  • Ortho-Tricyclen Lo.  I've been on it for the last 5 years or so and have never had a problem with it!  It cleared up my acne, never gained weight and my p lasts 4-5 days.  I love it!

  • I took Seasonale/Seasonique for 2 years, and it was my least favorite out of the 3 different BC pills I have taken. I spotted for the last 3 weeks of every pack. The break-through bleeding never went away, even after many cycles on it. I also gained weight and become more moody in general, regardless of whether it was time for my period or not.

It sounds as though the hormones you are currently taking may not be strong enough for you. That's what typically causes break-through bleeding. You may want to ask for a stronger dose or try the name brand, if insurance allows for it. Tri-Sprintec is the generic for Ortho Tri Cyclen. I've heard bad things about the Sprintec label. Even though generic drugs have the same active ingredients, the inactive fillers can be different and may cause your body to absorb inadequate amounts. I personally know several women who had issues (including BTB) when their pharmacies accidentally filled Tri-Sprintec instead of OTC.

  • Everyone's bodies are different and reat differently, so you could have these problems with any pill. That being said, I am on one called Mircette, it's an older brand. I've been on it for 9 years! It's cheap, has a generic (I pay $10/month) and I've never had any spotting in all these years. Plus the period is super short.
