A Star Called Henry

Last January book club post, I promise! I remember when we set up book club some of the ladies that wouldn't be able to make it asked if we could post a discussion here afterwards. So for anyone who read the book and wasn't able to make book club, what'd you think?

Re: A Star Called Henry

  • I'm so sorry I couldn't make it. I honestly never imagined I'd still be this sick :(

Regarding the book discussion, maybe I'm dense, but this isn't a true story, right? But all of the events that took place are pretty historically correct?

Correct. Henry isn't real, but a lot of the people he interacted with were- Michael Collins, De Valera, etc were actual people in the Revolution. Easter Monday, all of that, were actual events. It got mentioned yesterday that this may not have been the best book to just pick up and read without knowledge of Irish history. I got introduced to the book in an Irish history class in college, so I didn't really think about that.

And no problem. I can understand (well sort of b/c I've never been pregnant of course) that feeling that sick must be miserable. Hopefully you'll feel better for the next one! :)

  • Ok, that makes sense and is what I kind of figured.

I was really rooting for Henry to rise above his father's ways, and was pretty bummed that he used the leg as a murder weapon, but in his defense it was for the freedom of the country in a war-type setting, not a contract killer type of job.

I sort of felt like Henry was in the know, but never really. Like they were hiding things from him and he was their puppet to do the dirty work. It made me sad for him because I wanted more for him. The whole beginning with his mother was heartbreaking, and losing his brother as well.

It was definitely a hard read, no puppies and rainbows, but it was the reality of what gave the country freedom and reality of war in a much less civilized time.
