Didn't you win a free vacation one time? What ever happened with that?

I ask because I got a call that I won a Bahamas vacation and I was wondering if you had any info, if it was a scam or something.

Re: *Navy*

  • Have you googled the company?  Usually unsolicited wins like that, if not scams, are tied to timeshare presentations.  If you're sure you won't be swayed and can deal with high pressure sales tactics, a lot of people I've read about find it worth the 2 hours of listening to a presentation.
  • It wasn't unsolicited, I actually did put my name into a drawing at Pita Pit. They stated it was not for a timeshare, it is a travel agency.

The thing that makes me nervous is when I call the number it's a recording explaining the package and then they say I have to claim my prize before Friday, press 1 for a receptionist. So I pressed 1 and it hung up on me. The website looks legit, but that doesn't really mean anything.

  • Did you fill out a form and drop it in on of those boxes? I've won 2 of those, but I never actually took the trips because I figured it was a scam. Me winning twice led me to believe that maybe everyone wins. Even if it is a timeshare type thing or has an angle to it it still might be worth it though.

Yep, that's exactly what mine was. Google the company. I can't remember what seemed shady about it, but there was a reason why we decided not to take it.

  • Yes, I filled out a form and dropped it in the box. If it's legit I'm not one to turn down a practically free 4 day, 3 night trip to the Bahamas.

  • I tried to find something on snopes but couldn't. I think this is a job for LB, internet sleuth.

  • You wind up having to pay roughly $150pp, right? After port fees and all of the other fees? That's still an awesome for that trip. They might not be shady. It might have just been that it seemed weird to me and I didn't want to spend $300 to find out. I'm very curious now...

5th avenue vacations Bahama trip, I just googled that +scam and found a bunch of crap. Looks like I won't be claiming anything.

    image
  • Yeah, the first google suggestion that came up when I started typing that was "5th Avenue Vacations scam."

Ripoffreport.com is generally pretty good for stuff like this:

    http://www.ripoffreport.com/cruise-ships/5th-ave-vacations/5th-ave-vacations-5th-avenue-v-39562.htm

    Hi Everyone,

Today my daughter received a call from 5th Ave Vacations claiming she won this trip to the Bahamas. Her friend "won" this same trip a few weeks back. If you check the BBB website you will find 5th Ave Vacations with no feedback and a listed phone number of 727-456-6060. Here is where it gets good. If you Google the phone number as listed you will find it connects to Bahamas Getaways who also does business as Security Travel all at the same address in FL. Now check the BBB ratings for these and you will find F ratings with numerous complaints. Same phone numbers, same managers, different company names. You can also look up the names at ripoffreport.com.

Hope this helps some of you avoid these crooks

That sucks. No I was going to say that it isn't the same name as the company I had (Security Travels) but it looks like both of those names are linked to the same company.

  • I would call the place where you dropped in your business card and speak with the manager, either telling them that this is a scam, or if they know, telling them you don't appreciate their business giving your information to a company trying to scam you.

  • "The free cruise and free hotel mentioned costs from $200-400 a person in fees. That is a mildly deceptive ad. You get free food and drinks ON THE CRUISE, which is 6 hours long. when you spend 2-5 days in the Bahamas, YOU PAY for all your food and drinks in an expensive, touristy, captive town. YOU PAY ?tax? on the hotel $15 a day a person. YOU PAY for diving, transportation, entertainment, all of that. It?s expensive.

By focusing on the ?free? cruise and ?free? drinks for 6 hours each way, you are distracted by the REAL cost, 2-5 days on land where you pay for EVERYTHING. AND you pay roughly $200-400 for the cruise and hotel stay on top of that."

  • I don't know if it's related, but Security Travel Aegncy, Inc. was involuntarily dissolved back in the 80's.  It doesn't seem like a stretch to assume this is related.

  • Thanks ladies... now I want Pita Pit.

  • Sorry, just saw this post.  Sounds like a scam.

I won my trip through a contest/game show thing at a bridal shower.  It was through a reputable travel agency and hotel in Barbados.  We didn't end up taking it though because airfare wasn't covered and it was too expensive.

  • A couple of things you need to know. 1. On their form it clearly states that you are to pay port and service fees. 2. In FLA you have three days to get your money back. 3. The trip runs around $350 or $400 for two. 4. It is not the Ritz. It's a decent hotel on the island and more like a small mom and pop. You get what you pay for. Oh, and the cruise is a day cruise ship....it's not the Carnival cruise you may be thinking of...but...when you think about the fact that it's a six hour trip...it's more like a water flight! The trip is fine if you don't expect the world for nothing. They do offer pretty decent deals on upgrades if you want a better trip. We paid several hundred more dollars for the all-inclusive Taino and it was awesome! We don't think we got the deal of the year but we did get a great vacation at a good price!

     Just remember.............nothing is FREE!

Yeah, we figured this out last month.
