NOTD Reporting for Duty

Your NOTD is reporting for duty on yet another snowy day in CT.  We are in the midst of what our local TV station calls Winter Storm Ella, which will be a 2-day storm for us.  They expect 4-8" today and more to come tomorrow on top of what we already have on the ground (close to 2 feet).  I'm working from home, so I should be able to check in a bit easier today. :)

If I was to come to your city today (well maybe after the snow storm) what should I do first? Come visit me!  There's quite a few good restaurants in Hartford including Agave, Wood 'n Tap to name a few.  You could visit the casinos- Mohegan and Foxwoods.  Also, on the coast is Mystic aquarium and you could tour the CT Wine trail throughout CT or take a ride by train into NYC or Boston for the day.

Whats your favorite type of food? Italian

What was your favorite part of your honeymoon? I loved every part of our Mediterranean honeymoon...the evening in Barcelona, the cruise, French Riviera, and Italy.  I think the best part was sharing my first trip to Europe (and his, too!) with Alexi.  When I went to Thailand and Singapore without him it was an amazing experience, but I felt like a part of it was missing because I couldn't share it all with him if that makes sense.

What is Mariela favorite food? She is a great eater so far and love most food.  I think her absolute favorite is apples.  Now she is wanting to feed herself and she loves pancakes and Spanish rice.

What is one of your favorite things that Mariela is doing now? She is starting to try to copy what we say, so she'll throw things (her paci, food, toys, etc) on the floor and throw her hands up in the air and say the "uh" part of "uh-oh" or the "cay" part of "se cayo" (it fell).  Also, she's started walking around holding onto our hands and boy can she go!

Do you plan on going anywhere for vacation this year? We may take a trip down to NC and spend half a week near my parents and friends and another half a week at the coast this summer.  We're saving to go on a family cruise in January 2012, so our NC trip is a big "if" at this point.  Our family cruise will be on Adventure of the Seas (RC) out of Puerto Rico.  Alexi & I have been on the boat before (when I was pregnant with M!), but the itinerary is a bit different.

Where is your favorite place to shop? Lately I buy very few things for myself...it's about adorable little girl clothes!  I am addicted to Target and Kohl's for most things.  For M, we shop at both of those stores plus BRU and Children's Place.  But, my absolute favorite place to shop is from the warmth of my couch online to wherever I can find the best deals. ;)

plans for #2? we'll start trying in July/August depending on my cycles.  I'll be pregnant for our family cruise, but I can't be more than 24 weeks or I can't go, so that's what we're working around.  I'd love a May baby next year.

#3? We'll try for #3 when #2 is around 16 months old just so our LOs are at least 2 years apart.  Of course if #2 turns out to be twins for some crazy reason...we're done.

how is the reduced work schedule going? It's going great except seeing my paycheck makes me sick.  It's hard for me to see the cut when I worked so hard to get where I was.  I plan on keeping this schedule (4 days a week) after #2 and then after #3 we'll re-evaluate and I might cut another day or quit work completely.  We have to keep an open mind as childcare in CT is rediculously unaffordable and my in-laws aren't getting any younger.  We have a feeling that by the time #3 is here the in-laws might not be up to watching all the grandkids full-time and it would be better for us if I stayed home or only worked PT.  If I'm working to just pay daycare, though, I'll quit.

where would you move if you had to leave CT? We've actually been talking about this and we would go to FL since we both have family there.  It would be the Tampa Bay area as my older brother is in St. Pete and Alexi has cousins in Tampa.  Of course, there's no way we'd go until after Alexi's parents are gone...his parents would never forgive me for taking their 1st granddaughter away.

I know you used to ride/own horses when you were growing up. Tell me more about that!

I started riding when I was 13 when after YEARS of begging, my parents finally bought me some riding lessons.  After my first pretty bad fall when I got right back on and kept riding, my mom knew I was serious about it and bought me my first horse, Dan.  He was a Quarter Horse and I could do anything with him.  We did western, hunters, rodeo, and eventually I got into Dressage & Eventing.  I also bought, trained, and sold another horse I called Moose (he had a big head like a Moose, but was only 15'2) and then bought Sandi, my TB mare.  I had high hopes of training Sandi to replace Dan when I retired him, but then life, work, and school got in the way.  I leased her out for a couple years and then I bred her.

Dan passed away shortly after I met Alexi at the ripe age of 27.  Hartwin was born soon thereafter and I moved him to CT after he was weaned.  I leased Sandi out (down in NC) to a trainer who wanted another baby by her and the stallion that I used (Swedish Warmblood named LA Baltic Sundance) and started training Hartwin here in CT.  While Hartwin was growing up, I leased a horse here in CT for awhile and showed him a couple times in local Dressage shows.  Sandi had a filly and then I leased her out again to a young girl who reminded me much of myself.  She ended up falling in love with her and Sandi adored her, so I sold her.  I kept Hartwin until just after Alexi and I were engaged....it got to be too much with grad school and work to train him like he needed at that point (he was being started under saddle) and I hated to do it, but I had to sell him as I couldn't afford professional training.  I miss him terribly, but he's in great hands and currently showing in 1st & 2nd level in Dressage with much room to grow.

I hope to get back into horses again in a few years once my baby making years are over.  And YES!  I really hope M likes horses. :)

What is your favorite vacation spot? Anywhere new that I haven't been.  I love to travel to new places and experience their culture.  I love beaches/the ocean/swimming, so islands are on the top of my list.  I hope to cruise the Greek Islands one day and I also hope to do a Hawaiian and an Alaskan cruise.

What is your favorite season? Spring because I love how everything starts growing and coming back to life again.  Plus, it's such a relief after a long winter (like the one we're having this year!) to start to feel the warmth in the air.

What is your favorite comfort food? dark chocolate and raspberry...anything that has that combo

    HI!! Hey!

What was your favorite TV show growing up? I had quite a few depending on how old I was.  I'll just name a few over the years...Fraggle Rock, Rainbow Brite, My Little Pony, Mickey Mouse Club (the original), Kids Incorporated, pretty much anything Nickolodean (think Rug Rats, Double Dare, You Can't Do That on Television, Clarissa Explains it all), Punky Brewster, Who's the Boss, This Old House, and I could go on.  Man this makes me sound like a TV junky.

What is for dinner tonight? I have no idea!  I'm thinking raviolli with meat sauce and garlic bread

Favorite pizza? I love California Pizza Kitchen's white pizza that has Gorgonzola, pears, and I think onions on it.  It is scrumptious.

What has been your favorite stage so far with Mariela?

That's hard to answer, I think, until I go through them all and can look back.  So far, I like each stage for various reasons and I can say that I do miss the newborn stage when she was so tiny, squishy, and snuggly.  I also do love watching her grow, change, explore, and figure out things.  I get so proud when she figures things out on her own...you can just see the concentration on her face and she sucks in her lower lip when she's trying hard.  Then, she gets so proud when she does it.  I look forward to watching her grow, change, and continue to do new things, but on the other hand I don't want my baby growing up too quickly!  I'm kind of nervous about the walking stage as she's already into EVERYTHING....I'm sure there will be lots more to explore once she can run around.  I also look forward to hearing her little voice learn to talk and see her personality continue to develop.

What do you think it is about the ladies on this board that make us all keep coming back? We are a great support system for each other no matter what comes up in our lives.  We share the good and the bad, give unconditional support, the brutal truth when it's needed, and we have all bonded over the years.  We've formed an online sisterhood of sorts.

What has been your biggest challenge about being a new mom? I'd have to say being a working mom.  I always thought I could be a professional during the day and have my family the rest of the time, but going back to work was so much harder for me than I ever imagined.  Even working just a 4-day schedule is exhausting sometimes and I still have a hard time leaving Mariela to go to work some days.  I'm very thankful that the company i work for does offer flex schedules and my boss has worked with me to come up with a schedule acceptable to both of us, but I do hope to cut back even more one day.

How is Mariela feeling after her pukeapalooza? She is slowly getting back to her regular self.  She still is pretty much off her solids and she's been having loose stools now for 24 hours (not sure if they are just BM poos or the big D), but the puking is over.  Thank goodness!  She never got a fever and is playing more like herself today, so hopefully she'll start eating more solids again soon.

What is your favorite part of having dogs? I love their snuggles and wet dog kisses.  Tomas always grunts when he gives me kisses like he's saying he loves me in his own way.  He is a total Mama's boy while Lily is more attached to Alexi.  It is hard to have the dogs with the baby, but they are great with her so far.
