If you work at a computer all day, please come in...

I work at a bank, so most of my day is spent in front of my computer, even while assisting customers.  I was just wondering what you do to rest your eyes throughout the day?  Other than my hour long lunch, I am usually staring at my computer screen 75% of the day.  I try to get up and walk around to stretch my legs and rest my eyes, but some days we are so busy it's hard.

  • I feel your pain! I'm a frequent sufferer of headaches due to my work computer. I once read in a magazine that to ease eye strain due to computer use at work you should periodically look away from your screen at something farther away for a few moments. This somehow eases the strain of your eyes constantly focused on the backlit screen in front of you. Of course this would only help if you remember to do it, which I never do. I also try to drink a lot of water, which means more frequent trips to the bathroom away from my screen. GL!

My eye Dr told me the same thing.  Look at something else for a few seconds...as much as possible.  Also to make sure you are eye level with your screen..and not straining to look up or down too much.  Hard to do when working all day..but I def try to do it.

  • I'm very fortunate to have an office with a window, so I can look far off into the distance periodically, as my doctor recommends.

  • i set a reminder in my outlook calendar that just says "get up" - every 2 hrs i click to snooze 2 hrs, so that every 2 hours i'm reminded to get up and stretch or if possible go for a quick walk or to the bathroom or something.  it's hard when i'm in the middle of doing something but i try to find a stopping point within a few minutes and make myself get up.

I love this idea!  I've been forcing myself to drink more water, and that helps like someone else said, because I have to get up to use the restroom often.  Today was just difficult because I had a class that I had to take that took all day of sitting in front of my computer.  Ugh!

  • I am an insurance underwriter so I'm in front my computer 95% of the day. My eye doctor also told me to get up and walk around or concentrate on something else in the far distance for a couple minutes every 1/2 hour but that's a lot easier said than done, especially during busy season. I suffer from migraine headaches because of this and am prescribed Imitrex but I guess I will have to deal with it as long as I have my job!
  • I process flexible spending claims, and am in front of my computer for basically 100% of my work functions. Right now is our really busy season so I'm working 10 to 13 hour days, plus some half Saturdays...that's a lot of staring at a computer!

I too like to do more frequent bathroom breaks, and have also heard about looking away at something in the distance. Unfortunately I never remember!
