Recommendations

Okay girls i know that this may be a odd request but there is a reason. I would like you to recommend a psychologist that works with fears. The reason i come with this request is I have a huge fear of Needles. Me and H have talked about how we want to have kids of our own but my fear of needles are so bad that i can't stand being in the same room, not even the building where a needle is without having high levels of anxiety. I know when it comes to pregnancy there are many needles. So i want to take the step and try to find me some help to overcome this fear.

We adon't wanting kids for a couple more years because of H still in college and we want to be settled before kids. With my fear being so high i want to start now to overcome it.

  • Your doctor or ob/gyn should be able to rec a therapist.  Lots of people have phobias, so don't feel bad.  Just the fact that you know you need help so you can get medical care is a big deal!  There's a website that has a list of therapists by region-maybe Psychology Today??  Also, medication might help along with therapy.  Some people need to take a daily antidepressant to deal with anxiety, some need something just when they know they'll be in a stressful situation.  A doctor/therapist can help you figure out what will be the best for you.

  • I don't have a specific recommendation (all the other therapists I know work with kids, like I do) but I know that the Lindner Center of Hope in Mason has an anxiety disorders clinic. That may be a good option to explore.

With any therapist, make sure the person is a good fit for YOU. Everyone has different personalities and someone may be a great clinician, but their personality and/or approach  may not resonate with you. If it doesn't don't be afraid to move on to someone else or even to let them know it's not working for you. In working with a phobia, you're going to need someone you can trust.

That said, there's usually a pretty good prognosis for at least significantly reducing a phobia through therapy as long as you're willing to put yourself out there and work on it, and needle phobias are way common. Doctors are usually pretty understanding that some people are skeeved by needles, too. So with a little work on everyone's part, I think you'll be able to have that baby and deal with the needles in the process. :)
