Womenly Issues - TMI for this early

Ok so I am like 99% sure I have a yeast infection.  I have only had one before - and it was pretty similar to this.

What do you take?? Last time I went to the doctor - but there is no way I have time to go this time.  So drugstore it is.  But what medicine works?

Help!

Re: Womenly Issues - TMI for this early

  • A couple years ago I had one and was too uncomfortable/embarrassed to go to the drugstore, so my mom went and got me Monastat, I think it was a 3 day pack. Came with a suppository (that goes in the front, not the back!), some cooling wipes, and some cream. It worked and was quick!

  • I've only had 1 too & it was terrible, I just called my doc & they told me to buy the 1 day monistat.  GL

  • I'd go with the 1 day Monistat.

  • I've not had good luck with the creams. Maybe you could call your doctor and they can give you an Rx for a Diflucan since you have had one before and know what it feels like. My doc is really good about this. No exam or anything, just a phone call.

  • I unfortunately used to get yeast infections every couple of months. I can't use any kind of lubes or anything fun down there without worrying about an infection. If I don't have sex for awhile the first time I do I usually get one. IT WAS BRUTAL. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. About a year ago I was getting one about every month the week before my period. I went to a couple different gynos because they all told me the same thing that it was just a yeast infection and prescribed me a pill and cream. It worked after a couple days but I was so frustrated that they kept reoccurring and the doctors couldn't tell me why. My last really painful yeast infection I sat on the couch in dire pain. In desperation I searched the internet for some home remedies. I found one that told me to take the probiotic Acidophilus.  It has been a life saver! I've been taking the capsules once or twice a day everyday. So far (knock on wood) NO YEAST INFECTIONS!!! It has been a very pleasant last 7 months. I would suggest taking it to prevent future infections. Also I eat yogurt every day for the same reason. I hope you have luck curing yours! I know how unpleasant it can be! Good Luck!!
  • Thanks so much for the info - I will look into this!

Ditto.  Try calling your Doc first.  I just went for a yeast inf (also my first that I'm aware of) and she said to just call the clinic if I needed another or a 2nd dose, etc.

  • First, you should definitely go see a doctor immediately - either at a free clinic or your local gyno. You may have another kind of infection http://www.epigee.org/health/vaginal_infection.html which you will need antibiotics for.

If you do have a yeast infection - DO NOT use monstat or any of those disgusting creams. First, make a white vinegar/water douche or buy one from a drug store. Then, use boric acid to make capsules to insert into your vagina. Plug it with a tea-tree soaked tampon. Do this 1x a day at night before you go to bed. Vinegar douche in the am too. Also, take acidophulous pills available at most health food stores. Usually 1-2 a day.

Yeast infections are best treated homeopathically. The creams at the drugstore will just make it worse and itch more.

Also, a yeast infection is a sign that your system is out of balance. You may want to try a cleanse or detox, and also you might want to get tested for systemic candidiais as a chronic yeast infections are a sign you have a bigger, systemic yeast infection.

    Good luck!

  • Seriously, make time to go to the doc! Why waste time and money of OTC meds that may work? One pill, bada-bing bada-boom, done and happily infection free. Urgent care rocks, in and out in no time at all.

  • I'm with Katie. Homeopathic FTW!

I've used OTC meds before, and they work, but I don't like them. I usually use garlic. You smell terrible, but it works. Get a medium to large sized peeled clove of garlic and stitch a bit of thread through it so you can pull it out again (sort of like a stinky tampon). You'll also want to poke some holes in it or cuts to expose the interior flesh. It works faster when more of the garlicky goodness is exposed. However, if you're sensitive down there, start without cuts.

I also eat Greek yogurt smoothies with fruit and stuff, sometimes frozen for fun. Make sure you get the yogurt with the acidophilus added, otherwise it won't work. Eating this during an infection helps, but it's even better to eat it all the time.

I've heard tell you can put some acidophilus-laced plain yogurt inside your vagina to help with yeast infections, but I've never done it. Make ABSOLUTELY sure you get PLAIN yogurt, other wise you'll make it worse. Yeast feeds on sugar.

Again, since yeast feeds on sugar, limit your sugar intake while fighting the yeasty enemy.

    Good luck!
