Applications auto-rejected?

When I was in nursing school I did a senior clinical for 150 hours on a floor of a large hospital.  I've been itching to get my foot in the door, especially because I have connections with the people I worked with while I was there. It's all about who you know.  Recently 3 positions opened on this exact floor and my old preceptor (who is also a charge nurse) said she talked to the Nurse Manager and told me to for sure apply.  I sent out the 3 applications (which solely included submitting my "profile"), and within 10 minutes I had rejection notices for all 3 positions.

This most likely means my application never even reached a human being, right?  I let my old preceptor know immediately in hopes that there is some way around this, but how frustrating.  I meet every requirement for this position, so I don't understand the immediate rejection.

Re: Applications auto-rejected?

  • There was an article about this on Ask A Manager, a few people suggested it might have to do with your resume lacking certain keywords that the resumebot is looking for. Can you just submit your applications in hard copy to a hiring manager?

I have my old preceptor checking on it tomorrow, so I hope that's an option.  Oh to be a little birdy and find out the right key words would be nice!  Good thing I know someone or I might never even get a chance in this hospital.

A lot of times the actual job posting will have the keywords they are looking for.

  • Okay, here is the description.  I bolded words I think might be key words and I don't think I have any of them so I'll be doing a complete change of wording in my resume.

The Registered Staff Nurse (RN) provides holistic, compassionate care to patients and families. The focus is on independent, collaborative and delegated nursing functions as described in standards and competencies specific to the assigned service area. The scope of practice may include the care of neonates, infants, children, young adults, adults, and older adults throughout the life cycle. The RN executes the Standards of Nursing Practice including: assessment; nursing diagnosis; outcome identification; planning; implementation; and evaluation. The RN develops and revises the patient?s plan of care, coordinates care among disciplines and delegates activities to other patient care providers as appropriate. The RN participates in shared accountability and decision-making for nursing practices. Through active participation in practice and by implementing personal leadership qualities and skill, the RN defines, implements, and improves practice standards and the environment of care and promotes remarkable patient care.

Anything that stands out I might have missed?

I would use: implement, improve, independent/self-starter, delegate, etc.

The reason I didn't include those is because I know for a fact the floor I'm applying to is strictly adults.  It's a general medical-surgical/oncology floor.

  • That was extremely helpful- thank you ladies!

I added nearly every one of those phrases/key words.

  • Were there any specific qualifications (years of experience, licenses, degrees, specialty experience) that the description outlined?  Did you have to fill out any questionnaire along with your applications?  My company has a pre-screening questionnaire with most job postings, and if the score is not in the right "zone", there may be an automatic rejection.

    This is what's listed:

One year of RN work experience preferred, Graduate from an accredited school of nursing required, Bachelor's degree in Nursing preferred

I have all 3.  There was no questionnaire aside from a form I filled out with my job history, start date...etc.  Just basic info.  I know other hospitals have had questionnaires on specific experience with different age groups and skills, but this had none of that.

  • how many years of RN work experience do you have?  Maybe you had too much?
