home heartache?

anyone else aching for a home but just cannot move from renting to owning yet? we are almost ready but we don't have enough saved yet for closing costs, and we had to re-sign our rental lease so we are locked in until next dec. it is possible to break the lease but then we would have to pay rent and mortgage and we would not be able to do that. we almost went ahead with a home up for short sale (which ironically means it can take forever to go through) b/c time would be on our side...but there was a problem w/the heater and our financial guy said we wouldn't get an FHA loan for the home unless the owner fixed it and since the bank is the owner now, that's unlikely (go figure, you would think they'd wanna sell it fast). Anyway, I am a little heartbroken I want a house!

Re: home heartache?

  • I understand how you feel, but at least you are being responsible by saving! You aren't jumping into a mortgage irresponsibly. Once you have enough saved, and find a house you want, is it possible to sublet your apartment?

  • I am feeling the same way. I love our apartment and I love living here but the landlord has been hassling us a bit lately, which gives me the moving itch. I look at RE websites and find cute houses. I have no idea when we'll be able to afford a home of our own or what we'll be able to afford. I don't mind living an apartment for a while, but I see everyone else buying houses and having babies and it makes me want to do it too!

  • I've wanted to buy a house of my own for ages, but for the moment it's on the long term list. H and I agree that we'd like to have a house before we start having kids, but that's about as far as we've gotten in that discussion. In the meantime, I live vicariously through my friend who just bought a house and my other friend who is redoing her house, lol.

  • I am so feeling like this!  I am fed up with our rental.  Its in a good safe area but the house is older and needs some repairs and fixing up.  Of course, we are not about to put time and money into a rental so we just live with the super old showerheads and mint green living room walls.  It will probably be another year or so before we can buy though.  Even with wedding money I think we need to save some more and we have a lot to learn about home buying.  There is so much lingo I don't understand.

  • H purchased a house right before we met and I have recently moved in.  While I like our little house, there's a lot more that goes into owning than renting.

For example, three weeks ago I came home to an alarm going off.  Thinking that I needed to replace the fire alarm batteries, I did so - no luck.  Thinking that I needed to replace the carbon monoxide alarm batteries, I did so - no luck.  Well, long story short, we had carbon monoxide in the house and I had to call the fire department.  We had to evacuate for 2 days (H got his wisdom teeth removed the morning after the alarm going off so we lived in my parents) until I could get a furnace guy to come.  What a hot mess!  We have since moved back in, but are looking to re-do the bathroom here shortly (buh bye gold glitter countertop) and need to re-wire the whole house because it was not done to code.

P.S.  When you do buy, make sure you get a good inspection!  One of my friends didn't have a good one and a pipe burst in their basement, flooding everything!  And in our house they never realized that there were hot outlets in the wall and ceilings just covered up by stuff!

  • I know EXACTLY what you mean. When we moved to KS, we originally planned to get an FHA loan and buy a house....but instead we're living in a family friend's basement. It's a huge difference. And now we might not even buy for awhile because we are considering in the future moving to Minnesota to live by and work with hubby's sister and her family. And we'd like to live other places...Chicago...Colorado...NYC...SoCal.... so there's no point in buying til we want to settle down.

But I miss living in my own home. :(
