terrible well water- filter or whole house system?

We have terrible well water. We already have a water softener, but it doesn't do much. It is programmed correctly. We have a lot of iron. So much that our white clothes are some grungy color. When I use a humidifier, the water turns black from all of the minerals. We already have a filter, but it plugs up soo quickly (like every other week.) That gets expensive changing it biweekly. Any suggestions? I've heard of Rain Soft and they have some conditioner system that supposedly does wonders, but it is also expensive. We should've had our well dug deeper when we had it fixed a few years ago, but didn't have the money at the time. Anybody have success stories with installing something in their house? Can you let me know how much it cost and what it did? I'm also worried about our appliances from all of the scale and iron build up.

TIA

Re: terrible well water- filter or whole house system?

  • BTW, I will buy something that's expensive, if it's guaranteed to work. I just don't to put a lot of money into it if I don't know what's going to happen. Also, when we use the filter, I still don't notice much of a difference.
  • Do you have an iron filter?  We have lots of iron (well water is basically orange), so we have a separate iron filter system prior to the water going to the water softener.  It really takes the iron out of the water and will extend the life of your water softener.

  • My parents and grandmother both have Rain Soft systems and it was a huge mistake! After a year or so, things go downhill and it becomes not worth the hassle. My grandma just had them at the house last week, now she has no water! I do not recommend them

  • We have a whole house system, but we used a local company in Ohio, so that may not help you!  However, before we did that, we had several companies come out and test the water to see what solutions they offered.  Our well water sounds similar to yours... When we first moved in the insides of the toilets were turning black from the water.  We were able to get the stains out THANK GOD!

Anyways, enough rambling, we are quite happy with our water now!  GL

  • We have a well and I grew up w/ a well about an hour away from where I live now.  We just had our water treatment system serviced/checked out and I spoke to the guy about the whole system.   He explained that my parents' water an hour away could be very different than mine.  We have a whole house filter, then the tank w/ salt (which I believe helps take care of the iron,) and then 2 other tanks.  It's a Culligan system, but we don't use Culligan, it was here when we bought out house.  If the system isn't calibrated correctly we get a lot of iron in our water.  The filter does take care of the sediment.

He said one thing that could help w/ the sediment is having your well cleaned.  Costs about $550.  They pull the well pump out and flush the well clean, flushing any sediment out.  Also they can then check your well pump.  That sediment can wear out your well pump faster, etc.

I recc'd finding a local well/water company- ask your neighbors what they do/use.

  • thanks so much! I will look into the suggestions!
  • we are having the same issue. We actually get sediment coming out of the tub faucet sometimes! We have a local company out this week. I'm sick of looking at my white towels...they look so gross. Anyway, we live in a new neighborhood and our neighbors aren't having any problems with their water, which I find very strange. Do you know if your neighbors are having the same issues. I'm wondering if it's just a matter of time before they have the same problem.
