How do you....

...find time to do everything?? Between being at work all day, to cooking supper at night to cleaning the house & doing laundry not to mention taking SD to Karate lessons & etc. I can't seem to get it all done! I feel like something always needs to be cleaned, washed, dried, ironed, dusted, etc. How do you juggle it all?

I guess I'm felling overwhelmed since I've been sick & not been able to get things done like I normally do but I swear I don't feel like I should spend my weekends cleaning & doing laundry even if I am well. I want a maid!

Re: How do you....

  • I know exactly how you feel. I want a maid, too. Or 3 day weekends. Then I can get all my cleaning done one day and actually have 2 full days to relax.

As it is right now I spend almost all day Sunday doing laundry and it sucks. I know when I get sick I get behind on things, too, but once I feel better I go on a cleaning rampage until it's all done again. And DH helps out where he can.

  • I actually don't let myself sit when I get home and quick swiffer the floors or dust the family room.  I do one room a night that usually takes about 15 minutes so it keeps our place fairly clean.  I save the big stuff for Sunday afternoons when were just hanging out at home like our bathrooms.

It also doesn't help that I'm WAY type A when it comes to cleaning....

  • Oh I just don't. Sometimes I resign myself to say...you know what its ok that things aren't spotless...sometimes its just too much to do. Its horrible and I still have no idea how my mother does it because her house is always spotless but she also works close to home and with an hour+ commute each day its just too much usually.
  • I have a maid come in ever other week. Financially I shouldn't have one, but my place would be disgusting otherwise. I would probably switch to eating ramen noodles every night before giving up my housekeeper.

  • It is most definitely a juggling act!!

I have to admit - we do have a maid service (they'll be coming this Friday, in fact!) come in and do a deep clean once a month, and the bath and kitchen (which require almost daily attention), I maintain on an "as needed" basis. That is my bill, as H could care less who does the cleaning as long as it gets done...it allows me to spend my free time doing things I actually like to do :-)

I try to cook two meals on Sunday (one of them almost certainly is done in the slow cooker - usually a soup or stew of some sort), because H likes to carry leftovers for lunch, so that frees up a little time during the week. If we run out near the end of the week, we usually just potluck it!

I have always held that after working hard all week, the weekends are mine :-)) I happily try to do as little as possible in the way of chores, etc. I refuse to work all week and the weekends too...Cool

  • It's NOT easy!  My problem is, I'm always so busy on my weekends or days off doing errands, chores, putting things away, wiping something down, washing something, or whatever that I have ZERO time to sit down on the couch and watch a movie or relax!!!!  I can't wait until April (even if Mike's boss DOES deny him our vacation) - I still have 5 days off plus the 2 weekends!!!

  • I think if I insisted on having a super clean house then I'd be in trouble. During the week it helps that DH and I kind of have opposite schedules - he gets home later on MTF and I get home later WTH. Dinner is made by whoever gets home first, and we just make sure to wash the dishes and wipe the counters afterwards. "Real" cleaning like the floors, bathrooms, etc. just has to wait. We do a spot-clean usually on Sundays (vacuum, wipe down counters, tidy up) and once a month we do what I would love to be the maid's job of a deep clean. It works for us - but again if I was a real stickler for perfect dust-free living I don't know how I'd do it.

I do laundry on Sunday evenings and watch TV/have a glass of wine while it's going on so that doesn't bother me :)

  • I kind of follow Rachel's schedule/plan.  Hubby and I are certainly not clean freaks by any means.  I usually cook dinner and he does the dishes/cleans up the kitchen.  We have a standing rule the one person cooks and the other cleans up after.

I usually do laundry on the weekends, and try to get it done on Saturdays.  We usually pick up around the apartment then too.  Once a month or so, we do a big cleaning of dusting, vacuum, sweep & mop the floors, etc.  We did a major overhaul/cleaning right before Thanksgiving because his family was coming over for dinner.  We are hosting Super Bowl on Sunday, so I need to do some big time cleaning this week.  Mostly it's just putting things away.  We will probably do the floors Sunday morning before everyone comes over.

  • Ok whew! I feel better. I think we may get a maid to come in one a week or once every 2 weeks. It's nice to know that some of you have gone that route. I think you'd have to be Superwoman to keep the house clean, laundry done, supper cooked and work a full time job.

Thanks for making me feel better girls!

  • No Georgeanne - you are NOT the only one that feels this way and yes it is hard!!!!!    Sometimes you have to resign yourself to not getting everything done in one day.

Weekdays, I'm usually home by 5:30 pm so I make dinner and clean up after.  One thing that saves time, is cleaning up while you are cooking.  If something is on the stove or in the oven that doesn't need your attention, that's when I load the dishwasher, put away all the ingredients I pulled out, and wipe down the counters.  It helps alot!  We do a few loads of laundry during the week too - hubby is usually home before me, so he'll turn on the wash, so we can catch up on washing big loads of towels and stuff.

Weekends, it's the big stuff:  food shopping, vaccuum, dust, wash sheets, bathrooms, mop floors, etc.  I literally do one room at a time, so I feel like I'm getting stuff done.

Cooking is not a chore to me, so I guess that's why I don't mind making dinner every night.  It honestly relaxes me after a long day.   And I've started to "meal plan" ahead of time for weekdays, so I don't just randomly grocery shop, and I plan to make quick meals.

Allison, you are so true with this.  I have been meal planning for a while now and it just makes everything so much easier.  Plus hubby helps out a lot too.  If I sort the laundry, he can help with it if I'm busy or not home.

  • You ladies that have the help of hubbies on dishes and laundry are lucky! Part of Jeff not helping out as much is my fault as I can't stand the way he loads the dishwasher, and I haven't taught, yes, taught, him how to use our new washer and dryer, and I don't trust him not to mess something up if I don't show him how to do it right. Haha! : ) As far as the kitchen goes, he would rather starve that do dishes, so he is no help on that front either...but, I don't have to ever pick up a snow shovel, or mow if I don't want to, so I am fine doing the inside stuff. He does pick up his basement, but won't clean his bathroom. So, in the long run, I am ALWAYS behind! I really need to do a better job of keeping everything clean, I just have a hard time doing it. Maybe I should talk him in to letting me hire a maid once-a-month to come in and deep clean everything for me...def. something to think about!

  • I know, it is so hard. I don't even have any kids running around that need things and I am overwhelmed most of the time.

Outside help would be a joy!

OMG Danie are we married to the same man?!!?! I can't STAND when Nelson unloads the dishwasher b/c he puts stuff in random places (measuring cups with the tupperware??) or will just leave it on the counter if he doesn't know where it goes. I've shown him multiple times where everything goes - I guess it's just not important to him. Oh and he'll wash clothes but he won't fold them or put them up - just leave them in the dryer. When I wash & fold & put on the dryer for him to put away they will sit there for days until I put them up. His Mom is the type that did EVERYTHING for him & his brother growing up so he has virtually no domestic skills. I can't wait to have a maid!

YES!!! OMG! Jeff will NEVER put his clothes away either, and if he does, it looks horrible, so I end up doing it. I have to have my clothes in the color of the rainbow order in my closet, so now his are the same way. And, if he gets like a t-shirt out of a drawer, but it isn't the one he wants, he doesn't just fold it and put it back, he bunches it up, throws it in, and closes the drawer as far as he can...leaving the shirt sticking up out of it! I could literally scream! And the dishes??? He will put a bigger bowl on TOP of a smaller bowl! There is a system to this...we all learned it at 2 years old...things STACK! Along with the random placement and leaving it on the counter bit. But, if I move one of his things down in the basement an inch, he has to go fix it! Drives me FRIGGIN' in. sane!!!!!!

Oh, I know what you mean about the T-shirt thing. I had to re-fold 2 last night before I could put the clean ones in the drawer. Nelson doesn't get the stacking thing either. It's so nice to know I'm not alone.

BTW I was able to get a couple of loads of laundry done last night & Nelson took the rest to be professioally washed, folded & ironed. Big Smile I asked him to please put his clothes away when he brings them home this evening. He told me that none of them were his so I told him that he could put SD's away instread. I'm sure I'll have to show him where everything goes but maybe, just maybe, he'll remember next time & will be able to help me out. I'm gonna get him trained one day - I just hope it soon. ;)
