Alternative to being called "aunt"

I'm going to be an aunt! However, I absolutely hate how "Aunt Alison" sounds. That double short-A drives me crazy. I have never gone by any nicknames either, always just Alison. Does anyone have any suggestions on alternatives to "Aunt Alison"? I know it's early to be thinking about it since the baby obviously won't be talking for a while. Also, just having the baby call me by my first name isn't really an option as in my family its disrespectful for a child to call any adult by their first name only.

Thanks for any suggestions you have for me!

Re: Alternative to being called "aunt"

  • My nieces and nephews just call me "Auntie."
  • i have an aunt named jennifer. i have always called her jenjen. i am now an adult but she is still jenjen to me. maybe, your family comes up with something like that. a nickname for you.
  • My nieces call me "cool" and my husband would have been "uncle mike" except that came out as "gucky" so together we are "gucky and cool"

I would let them just go with whatever rattles off their tongue

what's your heritage, is there a name for "aunt" in that language that would be cool

  • I am auntie as per my screen name. I have a difficult to pronounce name with two "L's" in it. None of my nieces or nephews could pronounce before age 8; DH has some Japanese colleages who still can't.

I became auntie because my oldest niece could not say my name. She was totally bonded with me and they tried to surprise me by egging her one to say my name. They had this obnoxiously large portrait in their living room of me and would hold her up to it and say "who's that?" For the better part of a year she referred to me as "that"; auntie was a big improvement.

  • You might like the way it sounds when your niece or nephew says it.

This is exactly what I was thinking... :)  And Congrats :)

  • are you opposed to Allie?  My sister is an Alison and I'm pretty sure that she'll become Auntie Ali down the road.  Just a guess though.  That L sound is tough for kids  and often becomes a "w" until they've got more talking practice under their belts- you never know what they'll come up with for you!  I had a Great Grandma Rudolph when I was a kid and I couldn't say that to save my soul and started calling her Grandma Noodles!  It stuck.
  • Does your family's ethnic culture use a word for "aunt" that you like?

One of my friends has her nieces/nephews call her "Titi X," which is apparently a play on "Tia," the Spanish word for aunt.

  • Thanks everyone! I actually hate Allie, with every fiber of my being, haha. I've fought it my whole life. But the alternative language isn't a bad idea at all. I'm german, english, welsh and swedish, so while the welsh modryb would be crazy, but the german tante (pronounced tahn-ta) I actually like!
  • LOL you're name's fantastic-it's also mine and spelled right.

I dont have any true nieces or nephews but my BFFs kids just call me Ali. does it bother YOU if she'll only call you by your first name? if not then let her call you Ali. It's a lot shorter than 'my mommy's sister alison' :)

  • I was going to be "Aunt Emily or Emmy" depending but when my oldest niece first said my name it was "Mimi" so I'm now and forever Mimi or Aunt Mimi.

I would just kinda wait and see what the kid calls you because whatever they come up with, usually sticks.

I can't believe people actually think about this ahead of time with some eye for planning or controlling the outcome.

My nieces have been brought up speaking 2 languages (plus hearing a good bit of a 3rd), so I figured whatever they called me was a-okay, although I might need a translation from my BIL.  When she started speaking, the older niece called me "Antie Nana" (my first name is Nina) and the younger one has also always called me that.  Even though they can pronounce Nina correctly now, they call me "Antie Nana" - they know it's a special thing between us.

Don't try to control it, just go with the flow ;)

  • I have 2 brothers who both have kids...My oldest niece is only 5 years younger than me and her and her 2 sisters just call me by my first name.  My other brother's children call me Aunt _____.  I don't mind either way, really.

  • When my oldest niece was learning to talk, "Aunt Kristine" was entirely too much.

She's 16 now, and still calls me "Tine". It stuck for her two younger sibs as well.

I know a girl names Grace whose nieces and nephews call her "GiGi."

and I know someone who INSISTS that her nephew calls her "Nanny". I find that kind of weird.

  • My brothers and sister always called me Sissy while growing up (I was the oldest).  So when my nephew was born and my brother said Aunt Sissy instead of Aunt Shannon, I loved it!!  Even my nephews friends call me aunt sissy now!
  • **Lurker popping in**

My nieces call me "Ammie" - much easier than saying "Aunt Amanda."  Kinda neat that I get my own little nickname....

  • The older nephews I have both go from calling me Aunt First Name to just my first name.  They always call my H by Uncle First Name.  I think its cute the way it changes.  When they were both younger, all I got was a one syllable attempt but as they get older they change how they talk and so does what they call us.  Congrats!

  • I watch my nieces 3x/week. Tori was difficult for her to get out and I got shortened to 'Toe'. Although Toe is not the cutest thing she's ever said, it's what she calls me and I am okay with it. It's now even stuck within the family. Let the baby come up with something is what I vote. So, until something better comes along, Aunt Toe it is!
  • I call my sister Melissa "Buddy" most of the time, so I think this would be hilarious if I have kids someday who call her "Aunt Buddy".

  • I agree that the first kid will likely mispronounce, giving you a nickname on the spot. It's how my aunt and cousin wound up as WeWe and Chinny to my younger cousins.
  • I love Tante!
