Anyone own their own business/ sell a product?

We have been talking for a few years now about selling pickles. Dh and his dad make a batch every summer of spicy dill pickles. Everyone raves about them and tells them they should sell them. So this year we will start selling them vs. giving them away. I know we will start small (family, friends, and word of mouth). We want to create a website, I was going to design a logo, and labels, etc. But we need help on where to look on what we have to do by a legal standpoint (health, selling a food, etc).

Also, what are our best options for a website and promoting? We want to sell at local farmers markets, maybe local bars and restraunts, and eventually expand.

Any help, or possible where I can find help is greatly appreciated!

TIA!

Re: Anyone own their own business/ sell a product?

  • I recently started my own business - but its a web-based business so I can't help with all of the questions.

As far as website and logo goes - branding is very important.  Take the time to search web designers and figure out what you want.  A lot of companies will do design and development.  Some will only do design.  There is a lot of variety as far as price ranges go so be prepared to get a lot of very different quotes.  Go with what you're comfortable with, at the end of the day you can always upgrade in the future.  And these things always end up taking longer than expected and you never know how much back and forth there is going to be on the design front.  Our business idea was conceived in November and probably won't actually launch now until March.  The logo design takes 2-4 weeks and the website design 6-10 weeks.  Be patient!  It's better to put the effort in and make sure you have a quality product vs. rushing the process.

Also, I would recommend shelling out the money for an attorney who specializes in web development.  Our attorney wrote our contract and without him we really wouldn't have known what the standard is and what type of rights we have.  Also, he will be writing the Terms of Use and Privacy sections of the website.

As far as promoting goes.  For local farmers markets you should be able to just pay for a stand.  Website promoting - I would try social media like twitter and facebook.  Also if you are starting off local good old fashioned flyers might be a good idea.

Legally you have a couple of options - I'm not sure if selling pickles is an allowable service but most small businesses organize as an LLC.  If you can't organize as an LLC you can become incorporated as a Corporation.  Take the time to research your options for deciding what legal entity you want your business to be. I'm not sure what the other legal ramifications are for selling food - but I'm sure there are some.
